Story
Did you know that the novel "Lolita" would not exist if Vladimir Nabokov’s wife hadn’t stopped her husband from burning the manuscript? Or that Gandhi learned his legendary method of passive resistance from his wife? Or that the person responsible for Maya Angelou’s genre-defining memoir was her good friend James Baldwin? Significant Others is a narrated, nonfiction podcast about folks just beyond the spotlight of history. Each episode tells the story of a talented, difficult and little-known individual who altered the destiny of their better-known partner, child, sibling, or friend, and...

Love listening to these unique perspectives
Reviewed: 07-28-22
It's so interesting to hear about these other sides to very well-known figures in history. It gives a much more holistic view of these people, that they were, in fact, human as well and dealing with their own limitations. lt's such a crucial light to shine, because much of history/humanity is lost simply due to who is in charge of telling the story. By adding different perspectives, these people become much less distant, taken off their pedestals, and given a chance to be seen as the everyday, imperfect humans that we all are.

In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites listeners into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her - from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work to her time spent at the world's most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it - in her own words and on her own terms.

Honest, optimistic, & full of wisdom
Reviewed: 10-17-20
As a minority woman who has navigated many relationships with other minorities, privileged whites, and nonprivileged whites, I can safely say this is the first book Ive ever read that offered an honest and modern representation of the feelings I've had in similar situations growing up. By detailing her authentic and transparent approach to challenging situations, most of the time involving her race, Mrs. Obama is simultaneously offering advice and a strong, solid path for other minorities searching for ways to successfully feel safe, empowered, and find their seat at the table. Readers also get an even deeper sense of her deep and profound empathy for others and her desire to not only do right by her children, family and friends, but for the next generation of young women across the world. Thank you Mrs. Obama for sharing your story, your readers have a beautiful opportunity to learn from your life lessons and the people whose lives you've touched are truly blessed to have such a highly impactful leader create such positive change. Thank you for believing in us!
