This book might have been better narrated by someone other than the author. I'm disappointed in missing this highly praised work!

Mma Ramotswe is The Wise Woman we need—one I always want to know is there. I’m grateful that AMS keeps telling us about her.

I like John Sandford a lot, but the reader's performance turns me off. It's a strident voice, mistaking bellowing for drama. Can't stand listening for more than 15 minutes. A good example of a narrator spoiling a book.

I’m addicted to this series, it’s wonderful storytelling, & Peter Kenny renders the enchantment to perfection! One of the best actor/narrators I’ve encountered.

I liked the story, loved the insightful characterizations, and appreciated the crime focus. I’m looking forward to reading the other books in this series.

I can't bear to read one more of these pretty good stories because of the bad, amateurish writing. Chiefly, there is flagrant, habitual use of present participle without regard for what it is modifying. Here's an example: "Looking to his right, the wind had become a gale." I made that one up, but it is characteristic. It would imply that the wind was looking to his right. There are so many of these misused present participles that I end of screaming. Like barking dogs, they can't be ignored.

I just couldn't follow the narrative, perhaps because the names were hard to differentiate. Plot did not seem interesting enough to hold my attention.

I had to listen a second time to realize that the reader's acting difficulties (putting emphasis on the wrong word in a sentence, for example) would jar me out of comfortably inhabiting the author's world. I especially liked some of the metaphors, ie., the black stone enslaving women; and the various characterizations of both men & women, their roles in this many-layered imagined world. Abbiati has set us up for sequels that I would eagerly anticipate if another reader were to be used. How about Roy Dotrice, who narrates some of George R R Martin's books?

The reader is perfect, just what the story needs, the voice of a native American. This book has all of Erdrich's best qualities: story, passion, mystery, humor, caritas. I will read it again & again.
