Story
Appalachia has played a complex and often contradictory role in the unfolding of American history. Created by urban journalists in the years following the Civil War, the idea of Appalachia provided a counterpoint to emerging definitions of progress. Early 20th-century critics of modernity saw the region as a remnant of frontier life, a reflection of simpler times that should be preserved and protected.

Great subject - Uninspiring Writing

I don’t doubt the author has a deep connection to the region but you would never know it by the book. Just a dry collection of failed poverty programs coupled with a redundant list of social injustices. Not at all what I was looking for as a portrait of a land and it’s people.

With the retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy, the Court has never before been more central in American life. It is the nine justices who too often now decide the controversial issues of our time—from abortion and same-sex marriage, to gun control, campaign finance and voting rights.

Kaplan’s book makes a strong case that high profile cases that delight the left or the right - depending on the outcome - degrade democracy over time.
