Grief comes in many forms -
I can’t imagine experiencing the violent loss that the Avant family suffered. Hearing stories of her mother’s wisdom and grace was medicine for the soul whether your grief is a burden of the news, everyday struggle, or loss…. A path to gratitude and hope was a sweet companion during my commute all week.

Story
Kathleen Hanna’s band Bikini Kill embodied the punk scene of the 90s, and today her personal yet feminist lyrics on anthems like “Rebel Girl” and “Double Dare Ya” are more powerful than ever. But where did this transformative voice come from? In Rebel Girl, Hanna’s raw and insightful new memoir, she takes us from her tumultuous childhood to her formative college years and her first shows. As Hanna makes clear, being in a punk “girl band” in those years was not a simple or safe prospect.

Nobody is just one thing

I grew up in Seattle, deeply inspired by Kathleen Hannah and the female empowered DIY Olympia scene. From her feisty lyrics to riot grrrl zines… Kathleen's words have always resonated with me, and this book was no different. While it was hard to hear about her past trauma, it was equally encouraging to connect with her honesty and healing journey.
As I navigate different stages of my life, it’s funny how many of Kathleen’s stories continue to resonate with me – from themes of fertility and adoption to the importance of holding onto the things you love most. Her narrative captures the essence of not just surviving but growing, evolving, and thriving through the complexities of life. This book is a testament to the undying spirit of staying true to oneself, no matter the circumstances. Written with a lot of heart and a hint of AI in 2024. Thanks for being you.
