Story
The Imperium grip is slipping, thanks to Will's unexpected ability as a Void Drifter. But in revealing his abilities, Will may have put his home planet, a backwater most of the galaxy didn't even know existed, on the frontlines. But Earth is not as defenseless as it seems. An enigmatic billionaire, aware of the true nature of the Imperium's galactic menace, has been secretly building a defensive fleet. Still more fleets have been secretly constructed in the far reaches of the galaxy.

I didn't really enjoy the humor in the book, so not for me.
I did think the performance was really good though.

Just ok.

I feel like there was too much Jumanji-esk chase going on, and not enough driving the story line forward.
It also feels more like a fantasy book rather than a sci-fi book, too much unexplained magic going on.
It was a small step forward from the torment book though.

No purpose.
Reviewed: 06-13-23
I've really enjoyed most of this book series, and this one also seemed very interesting at first.
But in the end it just felt like the book had no purpose, at least not one I enjoyed, and there didn't seem to be a connection to the other books, but maybe that'll become obvious in a future book.

The mission is simple. Escort an emissary to an intergalactic peace summit. Try not to get in the way. Lt. Magnus and his 79th Recon Team have certainly handled worse, after all. But when an explosion rocks the tower and sends everyone into a panic, Magnus and his asset find themselves cut off from the rest of the team. Worse still, a dying alien chieftain gives them a priceless drive of intel, marking them for death. The mission has officially changed. With enemies on all sides, Magnus must do everything in his power to protect the emissary and escape the tower.

Please limit the preview to 15-20 min in the future.

The shared narration is a good idea, but...

The shared narration is a good idea, but it should have been shared more evenly.
getting a word or single sentence in the middle of a conversation just seemed out of place.
The story itself is good, but sometimes the struggles or mishaps just seems to be a bit much.
I understand the reason for it, but it just makes you roll your eyes at times, it was a lot worse in the first book though.
