Story
As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. In this audiobook, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

Wonderful storytelling
Reviewed: 09-12-20
Max Brooks once again shows that he is a master researcher and storyteller. The casting for this “theater of the mind” is perfect. In particular, Steven Weber’s performance and delivery is outstanding. And, while I’m not a fan if authors reading their own work, Brooks himself really is a terrific narrator.
The story is compelling and descriptive, and, much like his previous work, delves into the essence of human (and even primate!) behavior. I can’t wait to see what Max Brooks comes up with next!

Story
Humans live in landscapes of make-believe. We spin fantasies. We devour novels, films, and plays. Even sporting events and criminal trials unfold as narratives. Yet the world of story has long remained an undiscovered and unmapped country. It's easy to say that humans are "wired" for story, but why? In this delightful and original book, Jonathan Gottschall offers the first unified theory of storytelling. He argues that stories help us navigate life's complex social problems.

Excellent book, idiosyncratic narrator
Reviewed: 08-01-19
It’s an excellent book. The narrator had a few too many distracting mispronunciations (dropping the “L” in “wolf” or “werewolf”, and most irritatingly, pronouncing “experiment” like “experience” or “spearmint”). Once is odd, 20 times is a sin (where was the proofer/editor?!?)

Story
In The Profession, Pressfield taps his considerable well of military knowledge to craft a piece of speculative fiction set in 2032. With corporate and private powers wielding their own military forces, an exiled American general plans to return to the U.S. and claim the presidency for his own. Only his closest confidant stands any chance of defeating him.

Good story, poor production

The story is good, but the mispronunciations by the narrator (who doesn’t seem to know any emotion but “grave”) were inexcusable. CASEVAC (casualty evacuation) as “case-vac”, Hind helicopters should be like the i in high not hit. “Iran” is not what you did for exercise. These and several other glaring issues should have been caught and corrected, but for me they detracted from the storytelling.

Story
Join the Army and See the Universe. That is the motto of The Third Space War, also known as The First Interstellar War, but most commonly as The Bug War. In one of Robert Heinlein's most controversial best sellers, a recruit of the future goes through the toughest boot camp in the universe - and into battle with the Terrain Mobile Infantry against mankind's most alarming enemy.

Great story, wrong voice
Reviewed: 07-16-16
Good narrator, but he was completely wrong for this story. It also sounded like the engineer had to go back and overdub the beginning of several sections, and those recordings were done in a subway toilet.

Great story
Reviewed: 03-13-16
The story is great. Some reviews say Max's "interviewer" voice was too upbeat. I disagree -- that's Max.
A few of the actors come off as if they are reading the script "cold". Others pull off the natural conversation of an interview. You could almost tell which ones Max was working in studio with and which ones were recorded separately.
Anyway, everyone's a critic. It's a great book with some great voices and I'm glad I got to experience it on a long road trip.
