Story
Jonathan Franzen’s novels are celebrated for their unforgettably vivid characters and for their keen-eyed take on contemporary America. Now, in Crossroads, Franzen ventures back into the past and explores the history of two generations. With characteristic humor and complexity, and with even greater warmth, he conjures a world that resonates powerfully with our own.

I have known about this book and some of the story for ever. When I downloaded it I was thankful to have time and as it turns out the frame of mind to enjoy it. The length of the book stopped me but the audiobook really brought me into the story. The history of that time as well as the day to day life of the lower classes and the ritual of the wealthy class was most important. Excellent read and performance.

Story
In June 2013, three upstanding citizens of a small Cape Breton town cold-bloodedly murdered their neighbor, Phillip Boudreau, at sea. While out checking their lobster traps, two Landry cousins and skipper Dwayne Samson saw Boudreau in his boat, the Midnight Slider, about to vandalize their lobster traps. Like so many times before, Boudreau was about to cost them thousands of dollars out of their seasonal livelihood. One man took out a rifle and fired four shots at Boudreau and his boat. To finish the job, they rammed their own larger boat over the top of his speedboat.

This yet another fine example of the author’s work. I hadn’t recalled this story but as I read the details became familiar. Enjoy this story and the narrator. All good.
I met the author years back by accident and had a wonderful evening with him and others telling stories and surviving maritime life. Good fun

Story
While the North prevailed in the Civil War, ending slavery and giving the country a "new birth of freedom," Heather Cox Richardson argues in this provocative work that democracy's blood-soaked victory was ephemeral. The system that had sustained the defeated South moved westward and there established a foothold. It was a natural fit. Settlers from the East had for decades been pushing into the West, where the seizure of Mexican lands at the end of the Mexican-American War and treatment of Native Americans cemented racial hierarchies....

I had been anticipating this book for a while. Glad it came out now so as to include the current COVID changes to everyones lives. Also glad it didn’t come out while the administration of lies was wasting time in office.
Mr Gates does a pretty good job laying out the goal and what must be done. He does show his biases clearly while not mentioning names of course. Still this is a good read. I hope creative innovation is allowed the necessary funding to design the infrastructures that will keep the earth from overheating. As soon as possible.

A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash.

Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.
