Story
From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. The Pentagon has officially confirmed more than 150 of Kyles kills (the previous American record was 109), but it has declined to verify the astonishing total number for this book. Iraqi insurgents feared Kyle so much they named him al-Shaitan ("the devil") and placed a bounty on his head.

Story
Medical doctor and researcher Dr. Kris Verburgh is quickly emerging as one of the world's leading research authorities on the science of aging. The Longevity Code is his authoritative guide on why and how we age and on the four most crucial areas we have control over in order to slow down - and even reverse - the aging process. We learn why some animal species hardly age at all while others age and die very quickly and about the mechanisms at work that slowly but definitely cause our bodies to age, making us susceptible to heart attack, stroke, cancer, pneumonia, and dementia.

An amalgam of disjointed studies
Reviewed: 07-04-23
The intro was so compelling, but then the meat of the book was just citing study after study to make individual points with dubious support. I found it difficult to track the overall theme amidst all the detail and questionable support and conclusions. I wanted to like it more. Some bright spots, but not what I’d hoped for

More battle stories than lessons
Reviewed: 05-23-23
I was enthralled by the courageous anecdotes used to illustrate the points, but I thought too many pages were devoted to those stories vs the finer points of the lessons themselves. Not a bad book, but I can think of several other similar ones I would recommend instead.

Story
In his early 20s, Curtis Jackson, known as 50 Cent, rose to the heights of fame and power in the cutthroat music business. A decade ago, the multi-platinum selling rap artist decided to pivot. His ability to adapt to change was demonstrated when he became the executive producer and star of Power, a high-octane, gripping crime drama centered around a drug kingpin's family. The series quickly became "appointment" television, leading to Jackson inking a four-year, $150 million contract with the Starz network - the most lucrative deal in premium cable history.

Story
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

History of the Scientists More than the Pandemic
Reviewed: 01-12-22
I was hoping for a book detailing the onset, spread, impacts, and especially how it ended. While this book does cover all those points, it devoted far more time to the background and lives of the scientists who fought it than I was expecting. Thorough and detailed; but missed the mark I was looking for as I’d hoped to apply more lessons from a century ago to our current COVID-19 situation

Story
From Brexit in the UK, to Donald Trump in the US, to extremist parties in Europe and the developing world, populism has dominated recent headlines. What explains this rise of leaders who stoke nationalist anger in their countries, from Le Pen to Erdogan? How long will the populist wave last? Who will be the winners and losers in this climate, and how can we defend the values of democracy, free trade, and international cooperation? No one is better suited to explore these questions than Ian Bremmer, who has built his career on assessing global risk for his clients.

Love the author, but not his best
Reviewed: 11-14-21
I’ve read many of Mr. Bremmer’s books and articles over the years and think he is tremendous overall, but this was not his finest work. Perhaps he sacrificed too much depth to keep the book shorter, or maybe it’s due to the book’s age (written pre-COVID in a world that now seems so distant), but this seemed more a high level overview of many countries’ problems than an in-depth look at how governments and citizens can solve them. If you read the headlines, then most of this book will not contain anything new.
Highly recommend the author; please read another of his books but maybe pass on this one.

Story
In 2014, the world witnessed the start of a mysterious series of cyberattacks. Targeting American utility companies, NATO, and electric grids in Eastern Europe, the strikes grew ever more brazen. They culminated in the summer of 2017, when the malware known as NotPetya was unleashed, penetrating, disrupting, and paralyzing some of the world's largest businesses—from drug manufacturers to software developers to shipping companies. At the attack's epicenter in Ukraine, ATMs froze. The railway and postal systems shut down. Hospitals went dark.
