Story
The first in-depth look at Lance Armstrong's doping scandal, the phenomenal business success built on the back of fraud, and the greatest conspiracy in the history of sports. Lance Armstrong won a record-smashing seven Tours de France after staring down cancer, and in the process became an international symbol of resilience and courage. In a sport constantly dogged by blood-doping scandals, he seemed above the fray. Then, in January 2013, the legend imploded. He admitted doping during the Tours and, in an interview with Oprah, described his "mythic, perfect story" as "one big lie."

Any additional comments?
This was a book written by great reporters with knowledge for the sport— Reed Albergotti is a competitive amateur cyclist. The narration suited the book terrifically. It went at just the right pace, with suitable inflections and voices for quotes.

Story
Anthony Marra transports us to a snow-covered village in Chechnya, where eight-year-old Havaa watches from the woods as Russian soldiers abduct her father in the middle of the night, accusing him of aiding Chechen rebels. Across the road their lifelong neighbor and family friend Akhmed has also been watching, fearing the worst when the soldiers set fire to Havaa’s house. But when he finds her hiding in the forest with a strange blue suitcase, he makes a decision that will forever change their lives. He will seek refuge at the abandoned hospital where the sole remaining doctor, Sonja Rabina, treats the wounded.

Read the book and listen to this performance

What did you love best about A Constellation of Vital Phenomena?
This is simply a great story. Dostoyevski or Tolstoy would have written it this way if they were around (and had some sympathy for subjects of the Russian empire). It also reminded me of Bernard Malamud's writing.
What does Colette Whitaker bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Hers is just a great reading. Both the reading of and listening to the book brought out different accents. I am glad she did not do the narration in a Russian accent— it makes the dialogue, which is done in an accent, stand out better. I do not care for audiobooks done entirely in dialect or an accent.

Story
An authoritative and deeply personal narrative history of the State of Israel, by one of the most influential journalists writing about the Middle East today. Not since Thomas L. Friedman's groundbreaking From Beirut to Jerusalem has a book captured the essence and the beating heart of the Middle East as keenly and dynamically as My Promised Land.

Would you listen to My Promised Land again? Why?
Great book. Shavit puts into words everything I sense when I go to Israel.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Why does Audible have its narrators put on accents when reading books by feign language authors, or for that matter foreign authors? I do not need the Russian, Israeli, or English accents to appreciate books written by authors form those countries— I find it a distraction. The book is not written in dialect, so why should it be read that way. (At least this did not have the mispronunciations of Hebrew and Yiddish words I find in so many other audiobooks on Jewish or Israeli subjects. Lord knows how many other foreign words get mangled. Is it too much to ask the readers to research how to pronounce the foreign words they are reading?) Still, I was grateful for this audiobook because it allowed me to get through it quickly.

Based on nearly 10 years of research in Italy, France, and Israel, including interviews with Gino Bartali's family, former teammates, a Holocaust survivor Bartali saved, and many others, Road to Valor is the first book ever written about the Italian cycling legend in English and the only book written in any language to fully explore the scope of Bartali's wartime work. An epic tale of courage, comeback, and redemption, it is the untold story of one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is a great book about a great and modest man. The narration is terrific, and, even though it supposedly does not have Whyspersync, it synced with my Kindle and iPad Kindle app.
