Story
Imagine a near-future Britain in which women dominate workplaces, public spaces, and government. Where the gender pay gap no longer exists and motherhood opens doors instead of closing them. Where women are no longer afraid to walk home alone, to cross a dark parking lot, or to catch the last train. Where all men are electronically tagged and not allowed out after 7 p.m. But the curfew hasn’t made life easy for all women

The narrator did a fantastic job switching between all of the characters and was pleasant to listen to. The plot was intriguing and the book definitely kept me guessing and turning the pages. But I have to say….. Has the author ever had one decent man in her life? I kept waiting for the twist to the story that would flip the convention of the plot on its side a little and make us all “think.” But the whole thing just reiterated her point that all men are awful and can’t be trusted. Just kind of sad that that’s the reality she creates. As a woman reading this, I was disappointed.

Story
It is a perfect July morning, and Elle, a 50-year-old happily married mother of three, awakens at “The Paper Palace” - the family summer place she has visited every summer of her life. But this morning is different: Last night, Elle and her oldest friend, Jonas, crept out the back door into the darkness and had sex with each other for the first time, all while their spouses chatted away inside. Now, Elle will have to decide between the life she has made with her genuinely beloved husband and the life she always imagined she would have had with her childhood love.

I wish that I had paid attention to the bad reviews. While the prose is written beautifully, the characters in this book are truly unlikeable. Everyone is just horrible to each other. The parents, the siblings, even the people that the narrator encounters randomly are all nasty to her in one way or another. I don’t think there is one happy event in this book. Even the secret culmination of 50 years of unrequited love comes off as dirty back alley sex, nothing remotely romantic. So disappointing.

You don’t need to be a math major to enjoy the story in this book. Once you get past the first chapter or so, the story really picks up and drags you in. Loved the twists and turns in all of the characters lives.

Disappointed
Reviewed: 12-23-19
I bough this book based on great reviews and and a fondness for rock autobiographies. I have to say I was incredibly disappointed and had a hard time finishing. Though Debbie Harry is a talented musician, she gives a very halting and monotone narration. Her stories often seem unfinished. She jumps around a lot and will start to tell what seems to be a great story (going to one of Timothy Leary’s happenings in the 60’s for example), but then seems to share mundane parts of the storyline and leaves out the interesting details (she talked about his his long lecture and how she ended up being partnered up with a guy who was an FBI agent, and then... that was it). She alludes to extensive drug use but never really talks about it, she mentions her 13 year relationship with Chris Stein and her enduring friendship and love for him, but never once mentions why they broke up or even alludes that there were having difficulties. There was apparently tons of drama between band members, but again, she never really talks about it other than mentioning law suits and bad managers. I think overall, there just seems to be a lack of emotion in the book. More of a bland recounting of memories (and how is it possible to make her life sound bland? I don’t know!) At the end she tries to lighten things up by adding a 12 minute chapter where she rambles on about interesting things about thumbs. Really. Just... thumbs. If found myself rolling my eyes so many times through this book. I guess if you’re already well versed in Blondie history, this might be an interesting little addition to your knowledge base. But as a reader looking for a good story.... look elsewhere.

Exhausted by dead-end forays in the gay dating scene, surrounded constantly by friends but deeply lonely in New York City, and drifting into academic abyss, 20-something graduate student Richard has plenty of sources of anxiety. But at the forefront is his crippling writer’s block, which threatens daily to derail his graduate funding and leave Richard poor, directionless, and desperately single. Enter Anne: his brilliant classmate who offers to “help” Richard write his papers in exchange for his company, despite Richard’s fairly obvious sexual orientation.

I only finished this book because it’s impossible for me to leave something unread. That being said, the characters in this book are so difficult to like that I found myself rooting against them. The main character is whiny, selfish, and narcissistic to a degree that’s hard to imagine. He uses and abuses the people who care about him and then gets angry if they call him out on it. Most of the rest of the cast of characters are just pompous and/or obnoxious. I truly hope this isn’t how New York life really is.

Laurie is sure love at first sight doesn't exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there's a moment of pure magic...and then her bus drives away. Certain they're fated to find each other again, Laurie spends a year scanning every bus stop and cafe in London for him. But she doesn't find him, not when it matters anyway. Instead they "reunite" at a Christmas party, when her best friend, Sarah, giddily introduces her new boyfriend: the man from the bus.

I’m not usually one for kitschy chick lit as the plots are usually improbable and the characters rather silly in the decisions they make. However, this book was absolutely delightful. The characters were warm and relatable and the story line kept me listening into the late night. The narrators both did a great job, completely capturing the emotions throughout the book. I highly recommend for a fun, heartwarming read.
