Story
In 1927, eight-year-old Clara Harrington’s magical childhood shatters when her mother, renowned author, Bronwyn Newcastle Fordham, disappears off the coast of South Carolina. Bronwyn stunned the world with a book written in an invented language that became a national sensation when she was just twelve years old. Her departure leaves behind not only a devoted husband and heartbroken daughter, but also the hope of ever translating the sequel to her landmark work. As the headlines focus on the missing author, Clara yearns for something far deeper and more insatiable: her beautiful mother.

Memories of my daddy
Reviewed: 11-27-24
My large animal veterinarian father was this story and more…also a graduate of Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine who practiced in a small Texas town, drove hundreds of miles in his mobile vet-clinic truck to care for rural cattle, horses, sheep, elk and anything else he got called out to help. He practiced until he was 85 years old when his body, especially his knees and legs just couldn’t hang any longer. Brock’s tales were ones I lived with my father and I laughed and cried through this, remembering so many wonderful memories of a life well lived, loved and respected by so many. Thanks for bringing this to life for me, Dr. Brock!

Story
In enemy-occupied Paris, as the locals go to bed starving and defeated by the war, music and laughter spills through the door of a little restaurant, crowded with German soldiers. The owner, Marianne, moves on weary feet between its packed tables, carrying plates of steaming, wholesome food for the enemy officers. Her smile is bright and sparkling, her welcome cordial. Nobody would guess the hatred she hides in her heart. That night, the restaurant closes its doors for the final time.

Bloomsbury Books is an old-fashioned new and rare book store that has persisted and resisted change for a hundred years, run by men and guided by the general manager's unbreakable fifty-one rules. But in 1950, the world is changing, especially the world of books and publishing, and at Bloomsbury Books, the girls in the shop have plans.

I SO loved The Jane Austen Society and eagerly awaited her new book…I wasn’t disappointed! You’ll meet up with Evie Stone from TJAS who’s now in London along with a new cast of characters, all situated in a Bloomsbury bookshop. I loved that each chapter was titled by a “bookstop rule number” segueing from there to tell the chapter. The narration was delightful. A win in the end for women! Can’t wait for Jenner’s next book!!!

The characters are all terrific…hard to pick a favorite. And Kirt Graves does a phenomenal job at narrating the various voices and the story in general. I’ll look forward to more TJ Klune books AND Kirt Graves narrations!

Brings back memories…
Reviewed: 06-16-22
As a new nurse in a Labor and Delivery unit in a large, well-known county hospital (city to remain unnamed, but NOT in Alabama), we frequently tied tubes of mothers with multiple children. However, no sterilization papers were allowed to be signed or coerced while the patient was in labor and there was a strict 30 day minimum signature and date requirement on all sterilization papers. If a patient came in in labor with papers under the 30 date requirement, no sterilization was performed. Period. This was a direct result of the law referred to in Take My Hand.
I thought this book was a well-written description of family planning clinics, especially regarding low-income blacks, Hispanics and whites alike.

Story
His name wasn’t Chester Nez. That was the English name he was assigned in kindergarten. And in boarding school at Fort Defiance, he was punished for speaking his native language, as the teachers sought to rid him of his culture and traditions. But discrimination didn’t stop Chester from answering the call to defend his country after Pearl Harbor, for the Navajo have always been warriors, and his upbringing on a New Mexico reservation gave him the strength to excel as a marine. This is the first and only memoir by one of the original Navajo code talkers of WWII.

This is a part of history that cannot be forgotten. Without the Navaho Code Talkers’ part in the Pacific Theater of WWII, like Bletchley Park’s role in breaking the German’s Enigma Code in the European Theater, the United States wouldn’t have been victorious against Japan. These Navaho Code Talkers, whose role was left unidentified until the 1960’s or later, were American heroes and should be remembered as such. Chester Nez, in his words, gives us a semblance of his life and what it meant to be a Code Talker. Remember his name and all the other Code Talkers for we owe them and their generation much.

I was hooked on this book within the first few pages and although I’d figured out who had the Strad pretty much from the onset, there were enough twists and turns to keep me guessing. Could it have been Janice for some obscure reason? Maybe even wonderful Aunt Rochelle? I loved that the Audible version was interspersed with bits and segments of the classical pieces Ray was playing in his concerts and the competition. Best of all, the attention to detail in the descriptions of the concert pieces, tuning the violin, speeding up or slowing down a piece, etc. was so precise because of the author’s own experience as a concert violinist and teacher. The closing credits in the author’s voice alone was worth the whole listen.
