Doesn’t teach about hypnobirthing
Reviewed: 01-12-24
I was under the impression that this book would teach me at least some useful practices to use hypnobirthing myself, but most of the book is about justifying the need for alternative and more natural birthing rather than its practice and effectiveness. Furthermore, most of the thesis statements presented are personal and subjective, and while I don’t disagree that times have mostly changed for the better when it comes to how women’s bodies are treated, much of these statements were not substantiated with scientific evidence. For example, the author stated more than once that it is “rude” to use a bulb on a newborn to unblock the airways as soon as they emerge. Perhaps it is “rude,” but is it in fact medically necessary, or is this simply an opinion based on emotion? I would appreciate cited resources and scientific research.

Story
“Short stories have to accomplish a nearly impossible magic trick: to introduce a world often much stranger than our own and make you care about it in a matter of pages,” writes R. F. Kuang in her introduction. “The most important part of this magic trick is just a willingness to get weird.” The stories in The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2023 are brimming with bizarre and otherworldly premises.

Strange mixed bag

Strange mixed bag
Reviewed: 10-28-23
I enjoy sci-fi, and to a lesser extent, horror and fantasy, and while the annual anthology has impressed me in years past, this year was such an odd mix of stories which hardly had any narrative. The audio sample was not useful to assess whether I’d like it before purchase, only featuring the intro from the editor.

Story
Experience the evolution of all of Jewish life during the 10 critical centuries from its rabbinic foundations in late antiquity until the dawn of modernity in the 17th century. During this time, Judaism was forever affected by its encounters with the surrounding social, economic, political, and intellectual environments of both medieval Islam and Christendom. As a result of those encounters, new pathways of philosophical inquiry and religious spirituality would be formed. The Hebrew language would find new ways of artistic expression. And the role of Jews in the life of the surrounding community would be changed forever.

David Ruderman is excellent
Reviewed: 08-03-23
I wasn’t sure if I would make it through the entire course since it’s very long, but the professor was very engaging and kept things moving the entire time, so much so that by the final lecture I still wanted more. Professor Ruderman has other courses available from The Great Courses, which I will listen to next. Excellent, educational.

Story
After the Last War destroyed most of the world, survivors formed a new society in four self-sustaining cities in the Mojave Desert. To halt extinction, everything in the Four Cities is carefully predicted and carefully controlled … even love. But how can you control love and freedom? In the engrossing prequel to Reset, Preset weaves the tales of Eleanor, the Crone, and Eli, the Planner, before and after the creation of the Four Cities. Much has changed in the world and their relationship, but there are some truths that have yet to come to light.

Romance meets sci-fi
Reviewed: 07-28-23
It's rare to find a sci-fi title that features a strong female protagonist who uses her brain, along with romance that moves the plot forward. This is an intricate tale of a woman who is forced to choose between the greater good and herself, and asks, what must we sacrifice? Very timely with today's concerns about global warming and its broader effects on survival.
