Story
Caroline Collier is a woman bogged down in the harsh realities of a life barely lived. Stress from her all-consuming job as an accountant has given her panic attacks, forcing her to take a leave of absence from work. And though her chances of relaxing in the presence of her overbearing, perfect mother are slim, she joins her at the family’s vacation home in the mountains of North Carolina. Though Caroline loves the serene beauty of Lake Ophelia, peace of mind is not to be found.

The story is depressing and the reader tone is sleep inducing. It’s hard to tell if anyone in this book
Isn’t just too sad to go on.

Set in the tumultuous year of 1968 in southern Virginia, a racially-charged murder case sets a duo of white and Black lawyers against a deeply unfair system as they work to defend their wrongfully-accused Black defendants in this courtroom drama from #1 New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci.

Predictability of plot

Not being true to the vocabulary of the time and disrespecting the pain and injustice of the black race by being called nigger. The word was abbreviated in the reading of the story each time
It was used and I found it to be distracting to the sentence. It’s a vulgar and shameful word but it was integral to the story that showed hatred and prejudice towards the characters in the book. In my opinion.
