Story
The year is 1739. Eliza Lucas is sixteen years old when her father leaves her in charge of their family’s three plantations in rural South Carolina and then proceeds to bleed the estates dry in pursuit of his military ambitions. Tensions with the British, and with the Spanish in Florida, just a short way down the coast, are rising, and slaves are starting to become restless. Her mother wants nothing more than for their South Carolina endeavor to fail so they can go back to England. Soon her family is in danger of losing everything.

Another terrific book

Kelly Rimmer writes clearly & descriptively so that the listener can picture an understand the plot. The narrators were clear and showed emotion appropriately. I really enjoyed the book and will read more books by this author.

Story
Mrs. Post, the President and First Lady are here to see you. . . . So begins another average evening for Marjorie Merriweather Post. Presidents have come and gone, but she has hosted them all. Growing up in the modest farmlands of Battle Creek, Michigan, Marjorie was inspired by a few simple rules: always think for yourself, never take success for granted, and work hard—even when deemed American royalty, even while covered in imperial diamonds.

A Lover of Hillwood learns the history
Reviewed: 03-19-23
What a magnificent story. Having been to Hillwood many times, I loved learning more details of MWP’s life. I loved the history behind all the icons, paintings and jewelry. Well narrated also. A pleasure to listen to this book.

Not Alice Hoffman’s Best

The story was slow at the beginning. Got better as the story progressed. Judith Light was a poor narrator.
