The heroines in this story were inspiring and believable. It was entertaining to have many different women characters and learn some history about parts of Ireland, England, and Australia. Tying in the history of abandoned children was also enlightening.

Everyone needs to love and be loved—including men. But to know love, men must be able to look at the ways in which patriarchal culture keeps them from understanding themselves. In The Will to Change, bell hooks provides a compassionate guide for men of all ages and identities to understand how to be in touch with their feelings, and how to express versus repress the emotions that are a fundamental part of who we are.

Bell Hooks has provided a clear picture of the patriarchic society that we have all endured for centuries. With more people becoming aware of the pitfalls and oppression of a patriarchal society, rapid change can occur with intention to stop it’s practice. Women and Men can work together to create a new emotionally stable and compassionate environment for all personal and group growth.

Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier, the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city, is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.

Heartbreaking Story
Reviewed: 09-28-20
Learning about migrants trekking through Mexico to get to the US border was eye opening and heartbreaking. I would have preferred the book to have been shorter. I think there was too much repetitive reflection by Lidia that hampered the other characters and the pace of the story.

Story
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Self Reinvention

Braver, courageous, self reliant, honest, self/socially & culturally aware, truthful, heroine, self-disciplined, mentally and physically strong, determined, analytical, and ‘her’storian are a few adjectives that describe Tara Westover. Her memoir is heartbreaking but incredibly important for the place she grew up in to know the truth about being severely mistreated by her parents and a brother. To have been brainwashed and physically abused is the most corrupt behavior any pair of parents could afflict upon their offspring. May Tara feel whole and self assured that her memoir will do more good than harm.

Yet a home with too much stuff is difficult to maintain, so where do we begin? Add in paralyzing emotional attachments and constant life challenges, and it can feel almost impossible to make real decluttering progress.

Thank you Dana for your direct instruction to clear clutter from every space. To think of a home as a container that can only hold so much useful stuff during any phase of life. And acknowledging that grief is part of the process especially when handling deceased love ones’ things, dreams that weren’t going to come true, and marriages that end in divorce. I laughed out loud, smiled and cried. Thank you for tour kindness in producing this book.
