Loved Dot and her house. The mystery was interesting and fun. I actually gasped when [the secret thing was revealed]. Usually I guess stuff like that right away or get annoyed when something is too random to guess. The perfect pacing genuinely caught me by surprise.

Nat and Wes had a balanced rivalry that felt not quite realistic but instead reminded me of classic Hollywood romcoms with constant banter and barbs but no obvious bully or looser.

The familial trauma Wes experienced could have been fleshed out better. Some of his thoughts and motivations were muddled because his personal struggles were so specific to his family situation. But I would not have wanted him to spend less time with Nat. So maybe that B-plot could have been dialed back to something slightly more on par with Nat’s family tensions? It was hard to see him suffer without really understanding why.

Overall, the story was great and I can always count on Lily Chu to serve up a narrative that’s entertaining and easy to listen to. Great job to all, narrators and producers too!

DNF: Painful Characters

To be fair, the idea of a necromantic sci-fi adventure does sound interesting, but not with these characters.

I don’t need to see that masochistic bone-girl get a redemption arc, literally nothing could happen to her that would make me care. If I had to listen to that smarmy Rich Mean Girl voice for one more minute I would run screaming into the woods and eat dirt for the rest of my life. The narrator could have taken into account her obvious unearned redemption on the horizon and toned down the annoying voice.

The prose might be more readable in text form but the sensory overload of “show everything, tell nothing” was difficult to follow, especially with the narrator’s highly variable pacing. The moment I realized: “this *is* the story”, I stopped waiting for the plot to start.

Would recommend to anyone who had a toxic crush on their high school girl-bully.

Once again, Julia Serano delivers a thought-provoking work which never feels too heavy-handed or overwrought with academic jargon. It’s a surprisingly breezy read, and I highly recommend it to everyone.

No content warning for NonCon torture and mutilation. Fine if that’s your thing, no shame, but readers deserve a basic one-sentence content warning to decide for themselves if it’s worth the read.
