This book has extremely graphic sexual content and should come with a warning label. The reader did a good job but I’ve never been so embarrassed by a book as I was with this one.

Touches on so many familiar things, then puts a few twists in to hold your attention. For the audio book it would be better if the book was divided into more, much shorter chapters. Highly recommended “Sarek”.

Great way to understand Discovery
Reviewed: 10-19-17
Released at the same time as the new series "Star Trek: Discovery", this novel takes place a year before the events in the pilot episode and after Captain Pike of the USS Enterprise has visited Talos IV. If you're an Original Series fan you'll better understand where "Discovery" falls in the Star Trek timeline with this reference to Talos IV. We have the Enterprise and Pike in this novel which means, of course, we have Science Office Mr. Spock. The relationship between Michael Burnham (the female heroine In Discover--don't assume names are gender specific) and Spock will make every minute you spend reading this book utterly satisfying. When reading a book based on an existing series I usually assume the known ships we encounter look as they do on the series. With the amazing set and special effects now available on ST:D in 2017 that were not available on ST:TOS in 1966 I suggest picturing the JJ Abrams version of the Enterprise.

Story
Al Franken, Giant of the Senate is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.

Thousands of people have had near-death experiences, but scientists have argued that they are impossible. Dr. Eben Alexander was one of those scientists. Neurosurgeon Alexander knew that NDEs feel real, but are simply fantasies produced by brains under extreme stress. Then, Dr. Alexander’s own brain was attacked by a rare illness. The part of the brain that controls thought and emotion shut down completely. For seven days he lay in a coma. Then Alexander’s eyes popped open. He had come back. Alexander’s recovery is a medical miracle. But the real miracle of his story lies elsewhere.

It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As Henry looks on, the owner opens a Japanese parasol.
