The Nolans lived in the Williamsburg slums of Brooklyn from 1902 until 1919. Their daughter Francie and their son Neeley knew more than their fair share of the privations and sufferings that are the lot of a great city's poor. Primarily this is Francie's book. She is a superb feat of characterization, an imaginative, alert, resourceful child. And Francie's growing up and beginnings of wisdom are the substance of this classic tale.

"A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" is a classic and should be "read" by every book lover. It is a wonderful coming of age story of a young girl growing up in a destitute Irish family in 1912 big-city America. He fatheris a some-times singing waiter and drunk, her mother Katie washes floors and is the practical mother. Francie, the main character, loves to write and comes to find the joy of living in a difficult environment. She is that Tree growing in Brooklyn's rocky soil but she blossoms into a flower covered tree. The only negative is that as its only available in the lowest sound quality.
