Story
Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die.

Story
Gertrude "Gertie" Legendre was a big-game hunter from a wealthy industrial family who lived a charmed life in Jazz Age America. Her adventurous spirit made her the inspiration for the Broadway play Holiday, which became a film starring Katharine Hepburn. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Legendre, by then married and a mother of two, joined the OSS, the wartime spy organization that preceded the CIA.

Too Many Boring Details To Waste Your Time
Reviewed: 04-14-24
I didn’t like the content nor the reader of this book. The book went into way too much detail about Gertrude’s life before the war. It seems like she was a very self-absorbed person. I think her description of “Socialite” is apt and implies Gertrude didn’t do anything meaningful in her life. The reader’s pronunciation of foreign words in German and French wasn’t good. I’ve never heard the city of “Cologne” pronounced this way. She tried too hard pronouncing names and places in French. I was hoping to like this story but ended up feeling disappointed.

Story
Amy Bloom began to notice changes in her husband, Brian: He retired early from a new job he loved; he withdrew from close friendships; he talked mostly about the past. Suddenly, it seemed there was a glass wall between them, and their long walks and talks stopped. Their world was altered forever when an MRI confirmed what they could no longer ignore: Brian had Alzheimer’s disease.

Not as enthusiastic as other reviewers
Reviewed: 02-28-23
I read a review of this book recently in the New York Times. The review made me think this is one I didn’t want to miss so I bought the audio book. Based on the review, I expected to feel really emotional as I listened. I don’t know why but I didn’t. The author’s monotone delivery didn’t help.

Story
In these 12 inspiring lectures, Professor Fears presents a well-balanced portrait of Churchill that does not whitewash his flaws. Yet he also draws on the most recent historical scholarship and material from Churchill's writings and speeches to make the case that Churchill belongs with Pericles of Athens and Abraham Lincoln as one of the greatest statesmen in the history of democracy.

It seems like the perfect job. Great wages, accommodation provided and all located within the walls of Highwood Hall, a stunning stately home owned by the Howard family. Not many little girls dream of becoming a maid, but this is an opportunity for me to get back on my feet. And for me to revisit my past....

Story
Set in the 1950’s Paris of American expatriates, liaisons, and violence, a young man finds himself caught between desire and conventional morality. With a sharp, probing imagination, James Baldwin’s now-classic narrative delves into the mystery of loving and creates a moving, highly controversial story of death and passion that reveals the unspoken complexities of the human heart.

I found this book only ok. The first part is very slow and I found it hard to get into the story. I admire James Baldwin's writing ability. I think the book must've been groundbreaking at the time it was written because homosexuality was taboo. I found the narrator very monotone which contributed to my overall feeling of boredom. But I did press on to the end anyway.
