Story
All Leila wants is to get through her senior year at her new high school without drawing undue attention. Not that she has any big secret to protect, but her unconventional upbringing has made her very private. At seventeen, she realizes just how odd it was that two men raised her-one black, one white-and no mother. Not to mention they were blues musicians, always on the move. When her father died, he left her with a fear of foster care and a plan that would help her fall between the cracks of the system.

A great book for all readers/listeners

I read this book because my mom recommended it, at first I was like ya ok mom (insert eye roll) but then I started reading it and couldn’t put it down. When I saw the book on audio and was so excited, I listened to it the first time while I drove across the US and boy was it a life saver! I then got a different phone and couldn’t find the audio (insert weeping face) but then all was right with my audio world when I found it on audible. I just finished listening to it for maybe the fourth time and I love it! It’s a great story no matter what you genre preference or age is from my grandmother (70s) mother (50s) to me (30s) we love this author and her work. We love it so much that my mom nearly starts crying when I drop her off because she can’t take the audiobook with her. The saddest part is at the end when you remember that the second book isn’t available on audiobook! Listen or read this book, you won’t be disappointed!
