Overcoming Complex PTSD

I felt empowered after reading this book.
Do not let anyone gaslight you into believing you cannot overcome trauma from your past.

The book talks about how to overcome overwhelming feelings from hurtful and destructive incidences in our past. It talks about starting small and thinking about where you would like to be tomorrow. We already have enough tension in this life without adding shame to the mix. I liked this book as the tone of the writing and the narration made me feel that they were not judging me but rather they believed that anyone could recover and that anyone could overcome the effects of abuse or neglect from when they were younger. It felt like they believed in me.

I liked this book because it gave practical takes on how to start over when you need to recover. It is important to look at life in a healthy way. Especially if you were the victim of narcissistic abuse or are recovering from someone who was bad to you. It is very important to take care of your body. It helps you feel like you can be normal again. It shows you how think about Acceptance and Forgiveness, how to overcome resistance and to set new goals for yourself when you are going through recovery from a codependent situation. You must learn to live within society again, you must find balance and you must believe that you can be strong on your own again. Please read this book if you want to find some encouragement. Know that there are others out there also fighting the good fight to recover after hard times or abuse.

Hypnosis Works. Learn to Meditate.

I was skeptical at first but now I really see how guided meditation can work.

The scripts were especially insightful. The make you feel like you know how to let go. You don’t have to know everything. You just have to listen.

This books helps you take charge of your energy levels and to become aware of your surroundings. Learning to think positively about my family was easy, but the change really occurred when I started to think positively about people I did not even like. The best part of the meditations was learning that “my level of appreciation has less to do with the world around me and more to do with my ability to take charge of my energy levels”.

I wanted to take charge of my emotions. Once you truly believe that you can take charge of your mind and feelings then hypnosis will become a useful tool to mastering your own inner world. You cannot have compassion for others if you lack compassion for yourself. If you have trouble with anxiety about the world or need a way to stay calm throughout, you should try these meditations.

Got it for my sister with ADHD but read it myself.

I got this to try help my younger sister get her life organized as my mom said she had run out of patience so I should try to help her.
Honestly, I did not understand why my sister was so messy or did not seem to care about taking care of things around the house. That was until she got diagnosed with ADHD as an adult.
I assumed that men and women with ADHD expressed it in the same way but looking back after reading this book I see how women with ADHD can express it differently and be judged unfairly.
I have it too but don’t have the same symptoms. I could somehow clean up my room when I needed to, even though people just expect boys to be messy, but even when my sister made a to-do list, her spaces were always a mess.
Now we’ve been able to setup a house that makes it easier for her to live as herself without beating herself up about having ADHD. I like the tools this book suggests. Our relationship has improved.

Honestly, this book is actually really helpful, but I’m giving it 5 stars mostly because of its tone. It’s really encouraging and non-judgmental and I think it could offer the kind words that anyone with ADHD needs, women and others alike. Dope.

Helping Youth Escape Anxiety.

Read this so I could coach some kids at my local youth center.
Some of them have had a pretty rough journey so far, coming from broken homes and ending up alone or in trouble within their communities. Many of them could not break free from the harmful relationships they were in, mostly with bad friends in their age group. I read this to see if relationships between adolescents could also be codependent.

I am glad to report that I learnt so much about how easily even the simplest relationships can lead to personal anxiety and co-dependence — all it takes is for one person to demand that the others give up their sense of self. Never let anyone take away your sense of self. These are lessons I can pass on now.

Everyone wants to be loved and appreciated, but this can lead to dark holes if we try to get love and approval from the wrong people, like people who do not take accountability for their actions or that take and take without giving back their fair share.

I use this book to teach young people not to minimize their own needs. No matter how alone they feel, they should not throw their lives away or break the law just to fit in. Their own lives should come first.

Now I teach young people not to overthink when they feel anxious or feel that someone is taking advantage of them. I recommend this book if you want to learn how to stay yourself and be independent even when in tough situations.
Take control. You are worth it.

As the daughter of a narcissistic mother, this book set me on a path to recovery from my difficult past.

I grew up with a narcissistic mother. She filled me with low self esteem and set me on a path of accepting abuse from others even as an adult. I ended up staying in many long term relationships with people who did not appreciate me or treat me with love or care.

Ms. Hill’s book was an accessible read and has set me on a healing path to break the cycle of abuse that narcissism creates. I learnt how to first notice the patterns of abuse from my narcissistic mother, and then how to confront my own feelings about what I believe I deserve.

The book provides hope and explains the origins of narcissism in a way that is clear and measured. It gives solutions that are grounded in psychology, such as explaining the dynamics between siblings who grew up within a narcissistic home. Mothers picking obvious favorites. This can cause the rest of the children to develop maladaptive coping mechanisms, as they struggle to free themselves from the need to gain their mother’s approval, ultimately failing to gain an identity of their own.

The best part of the book was how actively it inspires us to get help and recover from our abusive pasts. The last part of the book focuses on understanding trauma and what it takes to recover. Hill shows us that we can find hope within our communities. She inspired me to take steps to face my own trauma and to believe in my own worth. The book helped me understand the immense rewards that could come from recovery and equipped me with the tools to talk about what had happened to me without fear or shame.

If you are trying to recover from the trauma of having a narcissistic mother, I would highly recommend you read this book.
