Great insight into a True Crime story.
Reviewed: 05-19-21
This book was so good. It offers such insight to the trauma, torture, and abuse the kids faced. It really helps you understand their mindset for how it was so hard to talk about or tell someone what was going on. We far too often tell ourselves that we would just leave if this was happening to us, but this helps you understand how controlled the victims of these people are. It also shows how embarrassing it could feel to come forward. It is hard to tell these things to a society that will not understand why you did not run away or just tell someone. Of course, none of us can fully understand how this truly affects a victims mind or even come close to being able to understand the constant battle they still face today after all the trauma and abuse. My prayers for the victims and their families. To the girls in this story... The strength it took to not only turn your parents in, but then to tell your story for this book is awe inspiring. There is no telling how many people you saved from such a fate or how many people will find the courage to come forth about things that happened to them or are happening to them now. Seriously an amazing story that offers such insight into this true crime.

I am not a picky reader. I even understand that some books can take a while to get into, but this book had me turned off from the very beginning. I have no words for the vulgarity. I do not mind books that have sex in them, but I havea hard pass at gang rape and the way this one was.

Story
It's no easy job being the town nutcase. Ella knows from experience. She's grown up in a quaint little place with people who pretend the extraordinary isn't happening around them. They ignore the bumps in the night and won't talk about doors closing by themselves or items moving mysteriously. They also won't talk about the old woman who haunts the streets. Those who do are fibbers, begging for attention. But Ella knows it is no lie - when the lightning cracks and the rain thrashes, someone goes missing: a child, lost to the night.

One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word.
