Story
In an alternate 1880s London, angels inhabit every public building, and vampires and werewolves walk the streets with human beings in a well-regulated truce. A fantastic utopia, except for a few things: Angels can Fall, and that Fall is like a nuclear bomb in both the physical and metaphysical worlds. And human beings remain human, with all their kindness and greed and passions and murderous intent. Jack the Ripper stalks the streets of this London too. But this London has an Angel. The Angel of the Crows.

Nothing like Goblin Emperor
Reviewed: 04-28-22
I've never read a published book that read so much like fanfiction. Granted, it's high quality in the basic sense, with correct grammar and all that jazz. But if you are expecting more Goblin Emperor and not really into... whatever weird Sherlock-Holmes-in-a-relationship-with-his*-asexual-Angel-roommate stuff this is, you'll be disappointed.

Story
In a land of mountains and mist, tradition and superstition, Languoreth and her brother Lailoken are raised in the Old Way of their ancestors. But in Scotland, a new religion is rising, one that brings disruption, bloodshed, and riot. And even as her family faces the burgeoning forces of Christianity, the Anglo-Saxons, bent on colonization, are encroaching from the east. When conflict brings the hero Emrys Pendragon to her father’s door, Languoreth finds love with one of his warriors. Her deep connection to Maelgwn is forged by enchantment, but she is promised in marriage to Rhydderch, son of a Christian king.

Good book, excellent narration
Reviewed: 08-18-19
I was really impressed with the narrator. It took a bit of getting used to her accent, and even once I did I couldn’t listen at the speeds I normally do (1.75x-2x). But over the course of the book she really won me over with her ability to do all sorts of voices and moods.

Good if not a masterpiece
Reviewed: 06-07-17
The story and the world were solid, if not the most original; executed well, if not masterfully. There was a mid-book drag for me, but I found the final 3 hours in particular so gripping that I couldn't put it down.
The narrator was good, rarely drawing attention to himself, which I liked. I found his falsettos slightly annoying and too similar to one another, but it's hard for men to do women's voices and it wasn't the worst I've heard by far.

I know it's a joke, but...
Reviewed: 09-29-16
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I know the book is a joke and it's a funny one. But I still didn't understand why the definitions faded out before they were finished. I thought it would still be fun to hear a few words brilliantly described, but unfortunately the definitions are not allowed to finish. How frustrating.
What could Various have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Let the narrators finish the definitions.
Could you see Excerpts from The Encyclopaedia Britannica being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Lol.
