Story
When summoned to a fantastical world and granted powers by a broken System, most freshly minted protagonists would strap on their big-boy boots and get ready for their stats to start climbing. But Fischer isn't like most MCs. In fact, he doesn't want to be a hero at all. Fame? Fortune? Power? He had enough of all that in his old life. Discovering forbidden fishing techniques and petting every cute animal that comes within scritching distance? Now that's a good time.

The narrator is in the top 5. I can’t think of a better narrator, actually, but logically, I can’t definitely say there isn’t a better one out there somewhere, maybe. It’s a long shot. He’s just fabulously talented.
Good story! Good characters! Unique! The protagonist is a genuinely nice guy. This is not earth-shattering literature, but what an incredible breath of fresh air! It’s clever, it’s original, and it was satisfying in its illustration of good motives and actions. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It left me happy enough to write a rare review recommending a listen.

A very original, imaginative, and refreshing read. The story unfolded in a way that really held my interest, and she was able to tell it without the gratuitous sex, bad language, and violence that less imaginative authors feel compelled to use. I enjoyed it very much and will read more by this author.

Story
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Any additional comments?
I made it through 26 hours of listening, but the coke-snorting, thieving, deceptive, sexually immoral protagonist was not someone with whom I could stand to spend any more time. I need a hero! My kingdom for a hero! Remember when there used to be good guys and bad guys, and you knew who they were, and you cheered for the good guys, and wanted to be a better person when you finished reading? I longed for this sordid protagonist to be a good guy. I longed for some redeeming quality to shine forth like a beacon in the dreary night. I just couldn't take 8 more hours of punishment. A ritual sage smudging to cleanse my thoughts and inner space would be fabulous.

Story
Read by Juliet Stevenson and Simon Callow, A Literary Christmas is a seasonal anthology that collects together poems, short stories, and prose extracts by some of the greatest poets and writers in the English language. Like Charles Dickens’ ghosts of Christmas Past and Present, they are representative of times old and new - from John Donne’s Elizabethan hymn over the baby Jesus to Rudyard Kipling’s "Christmas in India", from Thomas Tusser counting the cost of a Tudor feast to Laurie Lee’s "Cider with Rosie".

This was a nice collection of excerpts from great literature and poetry. The voice talent was superb. However, there was not even the slightest breath of a pause between one reading and the next. This technical issue was confusing and a great distraction.

Story
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

This book encapsulates the heartache and hilarity of our shared human condition. Just the best book I've ever read, no biggie.
