Awful
Reviewed: 09-22-20
It’s like a bad compilation of Dickensian characters with irritating continually asynchronous chapters. It dragged on and on. Characters are not likable and are a conglomeration of many well worn victims/martyrs. Nothing new, regurgitation of dark and dull characters that the author could not pull into the realm of being endearing or interesting. I wish the ship in the beginning of the book had sunk. The characters wouldn’t have been saved, but we would have. Save your credit for something good. The narration was ok, but many of the character’s voices became achingly irritating.

Story
Julie Walters has been described as the nation's most popular actress and comedienne. She has been delighting us on screen and on stage for over 25 years and - thanks to her undoubted talent, infectious spirit and self-deprecating humour - we have taken her to our hearts. Now she tells us her own story, in her own words. She was born in 50s Birmingham, daughter of an austere Irish Catholic mother.

I feel this could have been a much longer book. I am fascinated in people's lives and the courses that bring them to where they are in life. Julie is such a wonderful storyteller. Her accents are impeccable. This kept my interest and was saddened when the end came. I had the feeling of, "wait! I want more!" She is a treasure. I hope she continues to narrate books as she has such a skill for inflection, tone and creativeness.

Story
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

A wonderful narrator! He brought to life all of the characters so clearly, that I could see them as I would have watching a movie. The book transverses time as well as distance. The end was bitter sweet, made me cry and feel the losses and regrets that we all have. I think anyone who listens/reads this will feel that they have taken the journey as well. Well done!

I generally like the audible originals, however not this one. I found it to be very boring and tedious. Plot was tired and predictable. The narration was terrible and I will be keen to avoid this narrator in the future. Unfortunately, I find a lot of dull or shrill voices narrating books that would have been better served with different narrators. That said, there are also some fabulous narrators on here that have kept my interest, have thrilled and delighted me. The search continues...

That ending....so anticlimactic

I really enjoyed the book, great visuals. I could see the people and see China in my mind's eye. Agree with other reviewer about Haley's voice-not pleasant to listen to. Wealth seemed to be a central theme, a bit over the top that so many of the main character parties were rich or ended up rich. It did leave me wondering-what happened next, as it ended abruptly-a little lack luster.
