Story
A moving coming-of-age story set in the 1900s, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn follows the lives of 11-year-old Francie Nolan, her younger brother Neely, and their parents, Irish immigrants who have settled in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Johnny Nolan is as loving and fanciful as they come, but he is also often drunk and out of work, unable to find his place in the land of opportunity.

Interesting plot/Didn’t love main character
Reviewed: 05-09-25
I love that this is based on a real person’s life. I love the plot: fancy girl banished to a desert island. I just didn’t love the characters. Marguerite is so pious as to seem unreal. I didn’t believe her.

Story
Frederick Fife was born with an extra helping of kindness in his heart. If he borrowed your car, he’d return it washed with a full tank of gas. The problem is there’s nobody left in Fred’s life to borrow from. At eighty-two, he’s desperately lonely, broke, and on the brink of homelessness. But Fred’s luck changes when, in a bizarre case of mistaken identity, he takes the place of grumpy Bernard Greer at the local nursing home. Now he has warm meals in his belly and a roof over his head—as long as his poker face is in better shape than his prostate and that his look-alike never turns up.

Great premise, but didn’t love it
Reviewed: 04-02-25
I love stories about old people, so when I read the premise to this book, I bought it right away! What a clever plot! But it was just an “ok” read for me. A little too “flowery” writing. But I was interested enough to read it through to the end.

Great characters

I liked the main characters right away, which was a good sign, but, phew, this story goes on forever. I’m not a fan of the extremely short and abundant chapters. It felt jarring to me. That being said, I still enjoyed the story.

Sad, but beautiful story
Reviewed: 07-31-24
I really liked this story, or two stories that wove together. I ended up buying the book, though, because I didn’t care for the narration. Actually, I ended up listening to the male narrator on the “Joe” chapters, but read the “Norma” parts from the book, as the female narrator’s reading distracted me from the story and the amazing character.
