Story
We are constantly being formed by the world around us. To be formed by Jesus will require us to become his apprentice. To live by what the first Christian disciples called a Rule of Life—a set of practices and relational rhythms that slow us down and open up space in our daily lives for God to do what only God can do—transforms the deepest parts of us to become like him.

Life Coach / Disciple Maker / Apprentice
Reviewed: 01-18-25
This is a book about following the Way. It shares the why and the how we need and can follow the master rabbi Jesus. In simple and clear language, John Mark Comer reveals a way of living that is a gift from heaven. He speaks of a lifestyle that brings peace and prosperity for all. The path he describes was paved in Grace, and involves a yoking to the master of the universe who is full of love and wants the very best for us. It comes with a burden, but that burden is light. Every life coach, parent, and teacher would be wise to use this book as a core component to their vocation.

Story
Why does true Christian transformation seem fleeting? And why does church often feel lonely, Christian community shallow, and leaders untrustworthy? For many Christians, the delight of encountering Christ eventually dwindles - and disappointment sets in. Is lasting joy possible? These are some of the questions Michel Hendricks has considered both in his experience as a spiritual formation pastor and in his lifetime as a Christian.

Not an academic book

I did enjoy this book and I think it’s an important topic. I wish it were written on a more academic level. Still it was worth my time and I took away some important pearls.

Story
For centuries, the story of Adam and Eve has resonated richly through the corridors of art, literature, and theology. But for most moderns, taking it at face value is incongruous. Author John Walton explores the ancient Near Eastern context of Genesis 2-3, creating space for a faithful reading of Scripture along with full engagement with science for a new way forward in the human origins debate.

This is a masterpiece

I wouldn’t expect anything less than a five star review for John Walton and NT right, and that’s exactly what I gave this book. As an expert in the ancient near east and someone who so cogently communicate that to a general audience John Walton has put out another masterpiece. Of course as a huge fan of NT Wright I was pleased and edified bye his additions. Taking a very careful and well balanced look at Genesis one and two while pulling in context of the ancient Lavant, Mesopotamian culture, and Egyptian culture, and then including new testament use of Genesis one and two with a first century context, this book post together and all of the relevant scholarly inputs and synthesizes that data into a coherent and convincing argument. I particularly appreciate the pastoral tone of the book with a whole lot of grace given to alternative viewpoints as Dr. Walton repeatedly supports alternative views which do not contradict scripture. The thesis of this book maintains that Christians do not require a scientific explanation for the origin of man or mankind, while also affirming that such a scientific revelation does not and would not contradict the literal interpretation of what reread and genesis one and genesis two.

Story
Walton and Walton offer in The Lost World of the Torah a restorative vision of the ancient genre of instruction for wisdom that makes up a significant portion of the Old Testament. In the ancient Near East, order was achieved through the wisdom of those who governed society. The objective of torah was to teach the Israelites to be wise about the kind of order needed to receive the blessings of God's favor and presence within the context of the covenant. Here listeners will find fresh insight on this fundamental genre of the Old Testament canon.

I was introduced to John Walton and his works by Tin Mackie and Jon Collins (from the Bible Project) and by Mike Heiser (from Naked Bible, Unseen Realm, AWOT). I’m so glad I picked up this book. The work of ANE scholars has opened up a deeper understanding of the Bible through culture and context which John Walton has culled into bite sized morsels that we mere mortals can understand. I definitely need to re-listen to this book since so much of it was new or expansive.

Story
Born and raised a slave, Booker T. Washington rose from subjugation to become the voice of post-Reconstruction black America. In his 1901 autobiography, Washington chronicles more than forty years of his life, from his childhood on a Virginia plantation to founding an Alabama school for freedmen and minorities. At the heart of Washington’s teachings were the inspiring qualities he himself possessed in order to climb: self-reliance, hard work, perseverance, and a passion for education.

A must read. Extremely current. Valuably poignant
Reviewed: 01-12-22
Up from Slavery has been in my reading list for a few years. I wanted to read it because it felt I had a responsibility to read it. Now I wish I read it first. Re-reading it in January 2022, I remember when I first read it in high school in 1988. I wonder how much it influenced me then, because it resonates to my core now. I think Booker T Washington was certainly doing more than writing an autobiography. He was carefully, as he did his whole life, advocating for the humanity in all races to manifest daily. His emphasis on hard work, empathy, industry, education, charity, and faith not only epitomize his own life and life’s work but also serve as the template we should emulate today. This is a masterpiece for all time and should be read widely.
