Story
Marius's life has no meaning; not since he was cursed into the twisted, bloodthirsty creature of night. For years the witches have waited for their salvation, a way to return the magic that was sacrificed when the curse was first cast. Jak, a boy born with power that the witches have not seen in a century, is their prophesied savior. The one who is to kill the creature, break the curse and restore magic to his coven. Sent to the creature's castle as the final Claim, Jak must get close enough to land the final blow. It is what he has trained all his life to accomplish.

Gay vamps are always dope, but this audiobook isn’t
Reviewed: 02-13-24
I enjoyed the story pretty well, but this narrator was awful in my opinion. He had such a weird cadence and the way he chose to voice Marius was super off putting. I think the book is worth a read, but I don’t think I can recommend this audiobook.

Bad narrator and kind of boring story
Reviewed: 01-17-24
I know that this is supposed to be a classic, but it was kind of boring. I thought for the “king of horror” this would be a heck of a lot spookier. But no, it was pretty boring and just really bland. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the narrator is the most monotonous, dull reader that ever lived. No one had personality. It was impossible to tell which character was supposed to be speaking. They all sounded exactly the same. I listened to another book narrated by him and had the exact same experience. Not a good pick.

Satire at its finest
Reviewed: 01-09-24
This was an excellent book. A truly perfect example of political satire and absurdism, and really did a wonderful job of showcasing the absolute idiocy of right-wing politics. It also makes the excellent and very important point that silence and complicity in the face of hatred and bigotry makes one just as guilty of it as those who are actually committing the actions. But, just like Constance says, everyone is capable of change and growth if they really want to do it.

Hilarious Writing and Incredible Performance

This is probably the best performed audiobook I’ve ever listened to. There was so much energy and character and personality to each voice he performed. It was amazing! There were some super cheesy and cringey moments, but the way they were read made it so easy to ignore. I feel like Michael Lesley should narrate every book ever 😂

What a wonderful, sweet story
Reviewed: 06-24-23
This was one of the most enjoyable books I’ve read in a long while. The writing is clever and funny and the characters are all so diverse and lovable. It was refreshing to read a book where the characters being queer was just another aspect of them, not their entire personality or something shameful they must battle to accept. This book was filled with love and joy and it was a truly magical read.

Really great story
Reviewed: 01-12-23
I loved this story. I haven’t been this invested in a book in years. It was such a wonderful ride. My only issue with this audiobook is that the reader mispronounces a handful of words and that was a little jarring when it happened. But honestly, it’s such a small factor. Overall, this was amazing and well worth a listen (or multiple).

Story
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Moms are difficult
Reviewed: 08-17-22
This book hurts to listen to. It hurts to endure. It hurts to imagine a parent betraying their child like this. It stirs up my own pain and trauma.
Jennette is right. Moms are placed on such impossibly high pedestals. They can do no wrong. We are the bad ones when we are mistreated; it is our fault that it happens. Mom is doing this because she loves us. We are ungrateful, selfish, and hateful for thinking anything else. We are horrible, awful people when we try to confront their behavior. This is wrong. This is something that needs to be addressed on a broad scale.
Moms are not perfect. Moms can, and often do, cause harm to their children. Not all moms should have become moms. Mine probably shouldn’t have. Jennette’s probably shouldn’t have. And there are probably millions and millions more out there who should not have become moms. But we can’t talk about that. But maybe this book will help start that conversation. Maybe this book will help open the world’s eyes to how fucked up moms can be. How toxic it is to be trained to think you have to love your mom unconditionally. Even if they abuse you. Even if they are terrible parents. Even if loving them breaks you. We need to stop perpetuating such a harmful ideal.
Thank you Jennette for sharing your story. I’m sorry your mom was such a piece of work. I hope you continue to be able to find joy and hope in your future.
