Story
A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C. S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man. The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging and humorous account of temptation - and triumph over it - ever written.

Probably the greatest work of Lewis, to top it off, the reading is exceptional and great portraying a wicked and evil pleasure of doing abhorrent deeds. Highly recommend.

Story
Every generation has an uncanny tendency to view themselves as more enlightened than those that have gone before. The Church certainly has made mistakes all through history - and yet, no insights which we possess would be possible without the efforts, and even some of the mistakes, of our ancestors. The first volume of 2,000 Years of Christ's Power covers the period from the 1st Century AD to the start of the Middle Ages.

Easy to follow and understand
Reviewed: 09-30-24
I really enjoy Nick Needham’s church history volumes. They’re all easy to understand and follow yet not lacking in substance. Historic controversies are made simple, and possibly the gem of his volumes are the first hand accounts and works of the historic characters described. This allows the reader to understand the people and environment of the day rather than a one sided perspective from the author.

Story
At the age of 17, Spurgeon became pastor to a handful of believers at Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire, meeting in what had been a dovecote. Within five years, he had become the best-known minister in London. Two years later, following the Sepoy Mutiny, he conducted a service of national humiliation in the Crystal Palace that was attended by 24,000 people. But this volume is far from being a record of human fame and success....

Lacks a foundation for determining truth
Reviewed: 06-04-24
This book spends too much time with flowery language and “imagining yourself” doing something great, rather than concrete principles for coming to the truth of a matter. The author does well at getting the reader to question their bias, but not in questioning their resources bias, and preventing false dichotomies. What ends up is someone finding research which supports their bias and influencing and persuading others for a “truth” which has no foundation in reality. There can be plenty of evidence for something, but correlation does not equal causation. We live in a time where much of the research is paid for by organizations with a vested interest. The question is not necessarily can I find evidence of it, but is it true? Does that argument match up with reality? Winning debates cannot be about the search for truth and yet be heavily influenced by pathos and appealing to people’s emotions. Emotions often lie, and plenty of liars have been persuasive and emotional speakers, reference, every tyrant who ever rose to power.

Story
In his own day the dominant personality of the Western Church, Augustine of Hippo today stands as perhaps the greatest thinker of Christian antiquity, and his Confessions is one of the great works of Western literature. Now modern listeners will have easier access to St. Augustine's deeply personal meditations. Chadwick's lucid translation and helpful introduction clear the way for a new experience of this classic.

Great modern translation. Augustine was a genius (maybe too much?), and his confessions are devotional and heart searching. However, the end of his writings on Genesis are a theological and hermeneutical mess. Just something you have to deal with when reading the early church fathers.

There are two readings per day, one designed for the morning and the other designed for the evening. His writings not only will affect the day, but the refreshing devotions are intended for eternal impact. Wonderfully narrated by James Adams, this outstanding devotional is worthy of daily listening. Spurgeon's best known work comes alive through nuanced and meaningful narration, almost as if Spurgeon himself was encouraging us in matters faith, love and devotion to God.

Christ conquered the West the first time. And this is how he’ll do it again. And when he does it again, Christians must be ready to take the lead. Jesus really is the answer to taxes, civil resistance, and speech laws. However, Christians do not need another political platform. They need a plan. This book is that plan.

Full of Wilson’s sarcasm, wit and humor, the book is very easy to consume, but the content is deep and thought provoking, even eye opening depending on your background. Doug’s post-mil realism and optimism is refreshing and energizing. One of the best lines in the book, “Smaug is great, but Bard has one arrow left.”

Story
Since the days of the early church, Christians have struggled to understand the relationship between two seemingly contradictory concepts in the Bible: law and gospel. If, as the Apostle Paul says, the law cannot save, what can it do? Is it merely an ancient relic from Old Testament Israel to be discarded? Or is it still valuable for Christians today?

Though the subtitle may make this book seem dry and academic, dealing with an old theological controversy, this book is a must read for every Christian. By far one of the most important and practical books for preaching/teaching and living the Christian life I have ever read. I will be going through this book multiple times.
