Dripping with practical wisdom
Reviewed: 10-09-24
I went through this slowly because almost every word was so full of meaning and wisdom that I needed time to unpack and digest it. As a Benedictine oblate, these recordings deepened my formation by exploring chapter 7 of the rule in a systematic and practical approach.

Story
What if we truly belong to each other? What if we are all walking around shining like the sun? Mystic, monk, and activist Thomas Merton asked those questions in the twentieth century. Writer Sophfronia Scott is asking them today. In The Seeker and the Monk, Scott mines the extensive private journals of one of the most influential contemplative thinkers of the past for guidance on how to live in these fraught times. As a Black woman who is not Catholic, Scott both learns from and pushes back against Merton, holding spirited and intimate conversations on race, faith, and love.

An engaging narrative. The book is well-read and the author does a compelling job of engaging with Merton’s journals.

Fry gives us Holmes as he was meant to be
Reviewed: 08-06-18
I’ve been reading the Holmes canon since grade school and have read the complete works more times than I can count. The stories never fail to captivate and delight, and Fry’s narration is spot on. He gives us Holmes and Watson as I’ve always dreamed of them, and his own love for the stories shines through in his reading. Highly recommend.
