Story
Jodi Picoult delivers the riveting tale of one small town's entanglement with high-school violence.
New York Superior Court Judge Alex Cormier is assigned to preside over the case of the alleged Sterling High School shooter. Lawyer Jordan McAffee represents Peter, the boy who, on the day of the shooting, was found in the corner of the gymnasium holding a gun to his head with a shaky hand. Detective Patrick DuCharme has one star witness, but her story keeps changing. And then there's the biggest problem of all: the star witness happens to be Judge Cormier's daughter.

A great read!
Reviewed: 10-21-11
This held my attention from beginning to end. Picoult regularly tackles difficult subjects, and this is no exception. However, I found this one the best so far. She takes a painful situation and looks at it from all angles. At times, I almost had to stop listening because the torment of some of the characters was so real and so difficult to hear. I highly recommend this book, especially to those who like a book that makes them think. I wish this book were required reading for all preteens and teens, that challenging time of life when choices can have very unintended consequences. (And I am a grandmother, so I am not suggesting this is a book written for young people alone; just listen to it and you will understand.)

Very good story. Horrible narration!!
Reviewed: 11-02-10
I am just halfway through this book, and I will continue only because John Hart has written a very good story and I am hooked on it. However, I agree with others who say the narration is absolutely terrible. I'm not sure what Sowers was trying to accomplish, but it almost ruins the book. My 6-year-old grandson could do a better job!! I will avoid other books narrated by Scott Sowers, and that's a shame since Hart's book is good and perhaps I will avoid other good books simply because I fear the narration will be as painful as this!

Not Iles' best work
Reviewed: 01-29-10
I have really enjoyed Greg Iles' other books. Always captivating and well-written. And I've appreciated the narration of Dick Hill in other books also. However, I had to struggle to finish this one. The story dragged to the point where I realized often that I had stopped listening. And I found the narration difficult to understand at times. Liked the story, but was overall disappointed. Do listen to a preview before buying.

Story
New York book editor Maris Matherly-Reed knows a best seller when she sees one - even if it is just a tantalizing partial manuscript submitted by a writer identified only as P.M.E., with the return address of an obscure island off the Georgia coast. Maris is intrigued enough to search for him.
