Story
History has tended to measure war's winners and losers in terms of its major engagements, battles in which the result was so clear-cut that they could be considered "decisive". Cannae, Konigsberg, Austerlitz, Midway, Agincourt - all resonate in the literature of war and in our imaginations as tide-turning. But these legendary battles may or may not have determined the final outcome of the wars in which they were fought. Cathal J. Nolan's The Allure of Battle systematically and engrossingly examines the great battles, tracing what he calls "short-war thinking".

Military histories like this usually put me to sleep. This is not the unoriginal, wandering, tome that lacks a clear thesis that is most of this genre . I’m a poor source to evaluate this piece, but the premise is clear and well argued

Story
The Prize recounts the panoramic history of oil, and the struggle for wealth and power that has always surrounded oil. This struggle has shaken the world economy, dictated the outcome of wars, and transformed the destiny of men and nations. The Prize is as much a history of the 20th-century as of the oil industry itself.

Better than title, esp the later chapters

Lots of delightful detail throughout, but this story really works later when it backs in to Leaning In IRL.
Some low key palace intrigue for folks who like that, and some front row stuff on the last 20 years of econ policy, but the novel value add here is the family story, which goes from what feels like a clunky editor’s ask I. The first 2/3 of the book to a really clean through line in the last few chapters. The family story is well developed but may not be perfectly self contained. If you’re familiar with Yellen’s academic career and her closest coauthor, there’s a lot of interesting texture here that you won’t find elsewhere, and it’s v rewarding to read.

Story
In The World for Sale, two leading journalists lift the lid on one of the least scrutinised corners of the economy: the workings of the billionaire commodity traders who buy, hoard and sell the earth's resources. It is the story of how a handful of swashbuckling businessmen became indispensable cogs in global markets: enabling an enormous expansion in international trade and connecting resource-rich countries - no matter how corrupt or war-torn - with the world's financial centres.

Too many bios
Reviewed: 03-31-22
This is a great topic that the authors clearly know well, but somehow an editor managed to turn this into a series of short biographies about the (sometimes quite interesting) lives of prominent commodity traders. Was hoping for more structure and geopolitical discussion than a series of vignettes, but editors love personalities and narratives so this is much less informative and interesting than hoped.
