Story
The Great War changed everything and everyone, and Larry Darrell is no exception. Though his physical wounds from the war heal, his spirit is changed almost beyond recognition. He leaves his betrothed, the beautiful and devoted Isabel; studies philosophy and religion in Paris; lives as a monk, and witnesses the exotic hardships of Spanish life. All of life that he can find - from an Indian Ashrama to labor in a coal mine - becomes Larry's spiritual experiment as he spurns the comfort and privilege of the Roaring 20s.

Razor Wit & Insight

Have you ever approached the end of a story that you wanted never to end, and then started rationing the final chapters to yourself in order to drag it out as long as possible? The Razor’s Edge, Maugham’s final novel, is one of two such stories for me (the other being Round the Bend, by Nevil Shute). I have loved this story ever since I saw the movie made of it, starring Tyrone Power—more years ago than I’d care to confess to. I wish I had a tenth of the powers of observation and description that W. Somerset Maugham seemed to possess in such easy abundance. Great story, classic characters, spot-on performance in this audio production. I will treasure this one again and again.

Story
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

“Fail Safe” on Steroids

Want to scare the bejabbers out of yourself? This book is better than the best Friday the Thirteenth movie. Think you’re safe and snug in your little cocoon? Eh…not so much. When Barack Obama handed over the presidency to DT he told him that his worst nightmare—the thing that would keep him awake at night—is North Korea and Kim Jong-un. Now I know why…and so will you if you have the smarts to dig into this masterpiece of research and plausibility. Kudos to Annie Jacobsen for her brilliant writing, sharp analysis, and understated (almost deadpan, since the subject needs no embellishment), well-paced narration. She has the whole package. My absolutely only criticism is that she failed to tip her hat to Carl Sagan in the “thanking the dead” section of the acknowledgments. Nevertheless, I give her an extra star…make it an even six!

Story
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

There’s one truly courageous, anti-fascist, democracy-loving American hero that got left out of this book. She’s a talented, intelligent, well-educated and deeply dedicated investigative journalist by the name of Rachel Maddow.
Congratulations on another masterpiece, Rachel! Keep ’em coming!

Story
The world is waking up to a new reality: wildfires are now seasonal in California, the Northeast is getting less and less snow each winter, and the ice sheets in the Arctic and Antarctica are melting fast. Heat is the first order threat that drives all other impacts of the climate crisis. And as the temperature rises, it is revealing fault lines in our governments, our politics, our economy, and our values. The basic science is not complicated: Stop burning fossil fuels tomorrow, and the global temperature will stop rising tomorrow.

I’d like to ask the author (spoiler alert): What the h-e-double-hockey-sticks did you think was to be gained by clattering out into arctic wilderness polar bear country, armed with a single shotgun, barely enough provisions to last through this narcissistic ecotourist adventure, and a polar bear alarm system that might have been devised by a Tenderfoot Boy Scout? And what if you HAD been forced to kill momma bear? What then? Were you prepared to murder her cubs, too, or leave them to starve? She was well within her rights to charge you in defense of herself and her family. The fact that she didn’t suggests to me that she possessed more wisdom in her bear brain than was displayed by your entire company of dandies.
Dear Reader: Unfortunately, you will have to buy the book and read it all the way through to understand what I’m griping about. When you find out, I can only hope you’ll find yourself as disgusted as I was. I do admit that the book rings some 5-alarms that need ringing. And there’s a wealth of information, doled out in a predictable pattern. But at the end, I wanted to throw this book across the room. Honestly. Read it; get what you can from it; and marvel at how stupid homo sapiens can be—even, and maybe especially, the ones who write books about the coming (nay…already here!) climate disaster.

Story
When the United States government passed the Bill of Rights in 1791, its uncompromising protection of speech and of the press were unlike anything the world had ever seen before. But by 1798, the once-dazzling young republic of the United States was on the verge of collapse. Suddenly, the First Amendment, which protected harsh commentary of the weak government, no longer seemed as practical. So that July, President John Adams and the Federalists in control of Congress passed an extreme piece of legislation that made criticism of the government and its leaders a crime.

...the more they stay the same." This excellent history of the Alien and Sedition Acts is the story of the first major attempt of Americans in power to shut-up other Americans who weren't--something we never seem to get tired of doing. It's also an excellent history-based argument for why we should resist the temptation to undermine American First Amendment-style free speech in favor of more recent European models of "enlightened" controls on expression. Well done, Mr. Slack!

Story
Mania surrounding messianic prophets has defined the national consciousness since the American Revolution. From Civil War veteran and virulent anticapitalist Cyrus Teed, to the dapper and overlooked civil rights pioneer Father Divine, to even the megalomaniacal Jim Jones, these figures have routinely been dismissed as dangerous and hysterical outliers. After years of studying these emblematic figures, Adam Morris demonstrates that messiahs are not just a classic trope of our national culture; their visions are essential for understanding American history.

Maddening Mispronunciations
Reviewed: 08-22-21
Good history of an interesting topic. The epilogue alone is worth the price of the book. I would’ve given it a 4 stars (it takes something pretty special to get a 5 out of me) except that the narrator has the really annoying habit of mispronouncing words; lots and lots of words. It’s grating and distracting in the same way as frequent wrong notes would be in a musical performance (Samuel Taylor “COOLeridge,” Mr. Richards? Seriously?) The narrator has a nice voice and a smooth delivery…but god, man, study up on your lexicon!
