Love It, but..

I absolutely loved this book and before it was even finished I wanted more by this author, but that's when I realized that this is NOT the first book in the series! Throughout the whole book I kept feeling like I was missing something (which was my only complaint about the book) but once I found out that it was the second in a series that totally made sense. The first book is not available on Audible so just be aware.. it's a great book but you will feel like you're missing something.

Over the course of this gripping narrative, Dave Cullen approaches his subjects with unrivaled care and insight. What emerges are shattering portraits of the killers, the victims, and the community that suffered one of the greatest - and most socially and historically important - shooting tragedies of the 20th century.

So Much More than Expected

I started listening to this book after yet another school shooting was reported on the news and the best thing I can say about it is that I believe every word in the book. It was one of the most chilling books I've ever read even though I knew how it was going to end, but finding out the truth behind everything even after all this time just amazes me. I wish I could speak to Dave Cullen and thank him for writing this.

Story
It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

Heartwrenching
Reviewed: 04-17-12
What did you love best about The Book Thief?
That is was a look inside the lives of the average German family during a time when most Americans assume everyone there knew exactly what was going on and they were all monsters.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No - it was too sad for me. There was an anticipation throughout the whole book that something horrible was just around the corner and I couldn't take that to listen to straight.
Any additional comments?
I thought that writing this book from the perspective of Death was pure genius and completely made the book for me. I would recommend this to anyone.

Lisbeth Salander—the heart of Larsson’s two previous novels—lies in critical condition, a bullet wound to her head, in the intensive care unit of a Swedish city hospital. She’s fighting for her life in more ways than one: if and when she recovers, she’ll be taken back to Stockholm to stand trial for three murders. With the help of her friend, journalist Mikael Blomkvist, she will not only have to prove her innocence, but also identify and denounce those in authority.

It Has an Ending
Reviewed: 04-17-12
What did you love best about The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest?
Simon Vance. I absolutely love his voice and the way he creates characters with it.
Which character – as performed by Simon Vance – was your favorite?
He does them all perfectly.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Not laugh or cry but I was extremely disgusted with human behavior in some of the characters (which I know is all too true in real life).
Any additional comments?
When I first heard of this series it was in an article written about the author, Stieg Larsson, who had recently died. In this article the author indicated that at the time of his death Larsson was in the process of writing the 4th and reportedly final book in this series. Well, I did not have any desire to start reading a series that I knew would never be finished so I never listened to it. One day I ran out of books on my wish list and didn't know what to pick so I decided I might as well give the series a try and I was very pleasantly surprised. Not only does the series have an ending but all three books are very good to listen to. So I encourage anyone who has heard that there are supposed to be 4 books in the series to reconsider reading them anyway.
