Story
Russia, 1941. Katya Ivanova is a young pilot in a far-flung military academy in the Ural Mountains. From childhood, she's dreamed of taking to the skies to escape her bleak mountain life. With the Nazis on the march across Europe, she is called on to use her wings to serve her country in its darkest hour. Not even the entreaties of her new husband—a sensitive artist who fears for her safety—can dissuade her from doing her part as a proud daughter of Russia.

I've felt honored to know of the Night Witches
Reviewed: 07-06-20
This was a story that moved me even though I knew nothing about the existence of the group of valiant women pilots who served in the Russian air force during WW II. My father served in the US Army & my generation grew up with many, many stories & movies about the war but usually presented from the masculine viewpoint. The author makes it clear in her afterword that other than generally following only the movements of this group of pilots, navigators & support crews along with scanty published info from the actual subjects of this fictional account, her imagination brought to vivid life a tale that kept me engaged throughout. The narration was also top notch.

Story
People often say, "I feel like I've been run over by a truck." Katie actually was. On a sunny morning bike ride in Brooklyn, 24-year-old Katie McKenna was forever changed when she was run over by an 18-wheeler. Being crushed under a massive semi wasn't something Katie should have survived. After 10 hours of emergency surgery, she woke to find herself in a body and a life that would never be the same.

A very real girl who is sometimes incredibly irritating and other times amazingly inspired. I almost quit listening early on as I was put off by Miss McKenna's apparent self-centeredness but then realized that her tenacious grip on life and determination to heal is, along with the ferocious love of her family and friends a very important key to her amazing survival.

A beautifully tender story of hope and redemption. The narrator seamlessly switched between characters and soon I knew who was speaking within a couple of words. I'm very glad to have found this book and will be recommending it to all my friends.

In her phenomenally popular essays and long-running Tumblr blog, Roxane Gay has written with intimacy and sensitivity about food and body, using her own emotional and psychological struggles as a means of exploring our shared anxieties over pleasure, consumption, appearance, and health. As a woman who describes her own body as "wildly undisciplined", Roxane understands the tension between desire and denial, between self-comfort and self-care.

A very powerful story told by a strong and fragile an VERY BRAVE woman. Roxane gives voice to women both large and not-so-large by telling us how she crafted her life, both clumsily and intentionally after the violence and hurt of being raped at the tender age of 12. The fact that she reads to us in her own lovely voice makes this a very intimate experience, opening our eyes and hearts to the very visable "invisible" people all around us. May this book help to bring about more acceptance and understanding of people of size, enabling more of us to see past the obvious external to the grace that is present within.
