Story
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

Beautiful Reading of a Lovely Book
Reviewed: 10-12-17
Jane Eyre is another one of my very favorites with its dark and grim realities illustrated by the steadfast and morally upright Jane, the passionate temptations of Mr. Rochester, and the insidious retaliations of the mad woman in the attic. Thandie Newton adds a softness to the reading and renders each of Bronte's words with beautiful clarity. Even with her soft, clear speech and precise elocution, she still manages to convey the steeliness of Jane's character and the rough edges of Mr. Rochester. I highly recommend this reading.

Story
Set on Egdon Heath, a fictional barren moor in Wessex, Eustacia Vye longs for the excitement of city life but is cut off from the world in her grandfather's lonely cottage. Clym Yeobright who has returned to the area to become a schoolmaster seems to offer everything she dreams of: passion, excitement and the opportunity to escape. However, Clym's ambitions are quite different, and marriage only increases Eustacia's destructive restlessness, drawing others into a tangled web of deceit and unhappiness.

Enthralling Reading by Alan Rickman
Reviewed: 10-12-17
I have always loved this book - romantic English heaths and barrows, isolation, passion, devotion, heartbreak, and hope all told with beautifully rendered diction -- but listening to Alan Rickman read it was an entirely engaging experience. I forgot he was simply one reader because I was so connected to each character. Nothing felt contrived or silly; he just read it beautifully and with such appropriate nuance. I highly recommend this recording.
