Story
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

Gave me chills
Reviewed: 05-13-20
The uncanny timelines of listening to this book made it especially noteworthy. The author obviously conducted very detailed and in depth research on all aspects of the influenza of 1918, as well as on the key players and the world environment. The subject as it relates to current events (Covid-19) was so relevant and similar as to send chills down my spine at times. The narrator was excellent. This is an absolute MUST read.

The book has some great chapters, but also some chapters that made me want to quit listening. The author is a bit verbose, and repeats certain religious stories way too much for my liking. However, there were wonderful chapters with great humor and wisdom, as well, such as the one about how to raise your children. It was so good I made my children listen to it too, for the raising of their young ones. It's a mix, but overall worth listening to.

Interweaving personal narrative with the perspective of their own therapist-client relationship, their insights bring an unparalleled depth of awareness into just what it takes to successfully beat this challenging and seemingly intractable clinical issue.

True meat for recovery

We listened to this book to get a better understanding of our son’s challenge with anorexia, and for how it might help him heal, as his therapist had recommended it and he was reading it as well. What a wonderful book!! It contains a wealth of “meaty” ideas and exercises, not just empty words. If any book can help someone with an eating disorder, this one can. It is compassionate and also realistic, and is written by two woman who have themselves recovered. The narration is excellent.

Story
In this short book, Sam Harris and Maajid Nawaz invite you to join an urgently needed conversation: Is Islam a religion of peace or war? Is it amenable to reform? Why do so many Muslims seem drawn to extremism? What do words like Islamism, jihadism, and fundamentalism mean in today's world? Remarkable for the breadth and depth of its analysis, this dialogue between a famous atheist and a former radical is all the more startling for its decorum. Harris and Nawaz have produced something genuinely new: they engage one of the most polarizing issues of our time - fearlessly and fully - and actually make progress.
