Barcelona, 1945: Just after the war, a great world city lies in shadow, nursing its wounds, and a boy named Daniel awakes on his 11th birthday to find that he can no longer remember his mother's face. To console his only child, Daniel's widowed father, an antiquarian book dealer, initiates him into the secret of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a library tended by Barcelona's guild of rare-book dealers as a repository for books forgotten by the world, waiting for someone who will care about them again.

Story
How to you extort $600,000 from a dying man? Someone had done it very quietly and skilfully to the husband of Travis McGee's ex-girlfriend. McGee flies to Chicago to help untangle the mess and discovers that, although Dr. Fortner Geis had led an exemplary life, there were those who'd take advantage of one "indiscretion" and bring down the whole family. McGee also discovers he likes a few members of the family far too much to let that happen....

It is amazing how prescient the author was about the very things we worry about today. He touches on all subjects from the viewpoint of the mid 20th century, including politics and climate change. And he does it all while telling a great story.

After reading previous reviews I was prepared for a slow start leading to an explosive climax, so I paid close attention to the seemingly random descriptions in the first part of the book. It did not disappoint. This is one of the best books I have read or listened to in years. The narrator is perfect.

At the height of WWII, five idealistic young Americans receive a mysterious letter from the OSS, asking them if they are willing to fight for their country. The men and women from very different backgrounds - a Texan athlete with German roots, an upper-crust son of a French mother and a wealthy businessman, a dirt-poor Midwestern fly fisherman, an orphaned fashion designer, and a ravishingly beautiful female fencer - all answer the call of duty, but each for a secret reason of his or her own. They bond immediately, in a group code-named Dragonfly.

Paris During the War Years
Reviewed: 01-10-20
Overall I enjoyed this book. It has great descriptions of what it must have been like to live in Occupied Paris during World War II. I found some of the plot a little ingenious which was why I gave it four instead of five stars. The performance was excellent.

He's a self-described beach bum who won his houseboat in a card game. He's also a knight errant who's wary of credit cards, retirement benefits, political parties, mortgages, and television. He only works when his cash runs out, and his rule is simple: he'll help you find whatever was taken from you, as long as he can keep half.

Totally Hooked
Reviewed: 09-07-17
My father was a great reader of detective fiction. I remember John D. MacDonald paperbacks lying around our house when I was a child. So when I came upon this, the first Travis McGee book, I took a chance. Although the mores of the time differ from now and the women are definitely not the women of today, Travis McGee is a man for all generations. The story was engaging and exciting and I found myself thinking about the book when I could not listen to it. My only complaint is that it is way too short and left me wanting to learn more about this man and his adventures. I will read them all. Everyone should. It is a glimpse into a time long gone and, if you are of a certain age, it may help you understand the ideals and thoughts of a previous generation.

Story
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

Simply Fabulous

It seems, to me, that there are only two types of people who have read, or tried to read, this book, those that love it and those that hate it. For this reason I put off reading it for a long time. I am so glad I took the dive for this is one of the better books that I have listened to in the last few years. I grew up in the 50's and 60's and I remember watching (along with the whole world) the 1968 Democratic convention on TV. My parents grew up in the 20's and 30's and kept their secrets. They were truly as different from my in-your-face generation as the Millennials are from their parents. I suspect that those who could not get into this book are from that younger generation. I suggest that they go back and try again. This book contains a history of pop culture. It is a story about protest. It is a story of immigrants and the internet, and the invention of TV dinners, and it explains a lot about the America of today. I lost sleep listening to it and I will do it again, more slowly, as the writing and the narration deserve close attention. The book strays from. flirts with, but always comes back to its central themes. By the way, Ari Fliakos does a great Allen Ginsburg, LOL, I mean seriously!

Locke and Jean live to steal again!
Reviewed: 04-21-17
I am about a third of the way through this third book of the Locke Lamora series and I wish I had paid more attention at the beginning. Here is the thing. Scott Lynch does not review and recap his previous books but adds to them, builds upon them, makes them...well, magic! Things you did not find important (were you dozing or vacuuming? Did the phone ring?) or you just missed, come back to haunt you. My advice is to start over and try again. Chains would applaud.
