The Godfather IV: Prodigal Tony Audiobook By Mario Malachi Feast cover art

Horrible. Put a hit out on this title

Calling it awful is an insult to awful books everywhere. The narration is beyond bad (so many mispronunciations of ordinary English words). And the story--which changes from one character to another's first person narrative without warning is beyond stupid.

This is just ok. The translation is fair. There is a bit of monotheism applied which really is distracting. The performance is fine but it doesn’t uplift a dull translation.

Each lecture begins with a totally annoying series of people telling personal stories of the holidays; the lectures themselves are ok, but many are cursory. And the Professor mispronounces many words. Don't waste any money on this.

Where to begin--in the many, many mispronunciations? The one narrator who sounds like Siri slowed down? The predicable, not at all original plot? At best, this is ok. The concept is fine, but really is anyone shocked about (spoiler alert) a love relationship between two women on opposite sides of a war. Don't waste your time.

Decent Overview of Mesopotamia

The professor is clearly knowledgeable about the history of Mesopotamia. Many of the lectures are informative and enjoyable. But, I didn't get a decent chronology here, I have no idea of why certain of the empires rose and fell. There are some good segments about life in the area, but I just don't feel like I know that much more than I did previously. Also, she seems to think that the Bible is a historical reference, and no good historian would treat the Bible as a history book. That was a big minus here for me.

This book is basically about an immersion into some Jamaican culture. It's a very good character study, and each chapter is told from one of about 10 main characters points of view. But, it really drags on. There is very little plot. It's a good listen, well performed. But seriously, this could have been a five hour book and I'd have gotten just as much out of it.

The professor certainly knows her stuff--she gives a pretty unbiased look at the Norman Conquest and the events leading up to it. I breezed right through the lectures. Definitely learned alot.

The cast is very good, but Deaver falls far short of his usual excellence. The story is trite, simply an average action/adventure tale. No great surprises. It's an ok listen.

Yes, it's an updated, sort-of-sci-fi version of Dante. The problem is that many of the references were relevant in the 70's and if you aren't up on your 70's history and pop-culture, you will probably miss them. I think I got maybe half of them. It's a good listen, but would love to have a guide to the book to tell me who they were actually talking about.

Excellent overview of Spanish History

Ok, the negatives first:
1) The professor mispronounces some common place names and other words. In her attempt to sound authentically Spanish, she flubs some words. Most won't notice it, but it's a peeve of mine
2) She glosses over most of the horrors of the Inquisition. It's mentioned, but there's not a lot of detail
3) She also give Franco much better treatment than he deserves. While she's not a supporter of him, she doesn't condemn him to any real degree.

Other than that, it's a far reaching overview of 5,000 years of Spanish history. I learned a tremendous amount that I didn't know. The Prof. has a pleasant voice and the lectures move quickly. It's well thought out and comes across as a coherent story.
