Story
Claude Wheeler resembles the youngest son of an American fairy tale. His fortune is ready-made for him, but he refuses to settle for it. Alienated from his crass father and pious mother, all but rejected by a wife who reserves her ardor for missionary work, and dissatisfied with farming, Claude is an idealist without an ideal to cling to. It is only when his country enters the First World War that Claude finds what he has been searching for all his life.

Boring story that went no where
Reviewed: 01-27-25
I read this because I’ve liked several other books by Willa Cather and because this is a Pulitzer Prize winner. However, I feel like the second half of the book was like wading through mud. I no longer cared about the main character and just finished to say I’d done so. I was really hoping something would happen in the end but it didn’t. The narrator was not horrible but was a bit monotone and slow.

Story
A natural storyteller and raconteur in his own right - just listen to Paddle Your Own Canoe and Gumption - actor, comedian, carpenter, and all-around manly man Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) brings his distinctive baritone and a fine-tuned comic versatility to Twain's writing. In a knockout performance, he doesn't so much as read Twain's words as he does rejoice in them, delighting in the hijinks of Tom - whom he lovingly refers to as a "great scam artist" and "true American hero".

Easy, Enjoyable Listen

The narrator was absolutely the best! The story was easy and enjoyable to listen to. Some parts were quite funny. I loved learning about the superstitions of that time. Seemed to wrap things up a bit too easily, but overall a good read and I guess a happy ending is a good one. (Be aware there are racial terms used from the time it was written.)
