A nice start to the series

Since my reading is further along in the series, my first audiobook was the ninth in the series, and it was fantastic - kept me going on my long runs on the treadmill; so I moved on to the next, Narcissus in Chains. God awful. I had noticed it was a different narrator from my previous selection, but I was willing to give it a shot...but I just don't get what all the Cynthia Holloway fans enjoy about her. She sounds so whiney! So I started back in the beginning cuz I saw Kimberly Alexis did the narration for the first few books. Kimberly's my girl. She does a really strong Anita, smart, confident, still with right amount of sarcasm and snark. I saw one review that said she made Anita sound too strong, which struck me as odd. If you like an Anita who can handle herself, stick with Kimberly; if you want a whiney, obnoxious Anita, go with Cynthia-narrated audiobooks.

Abridged edition: Number-one New York Times best-selling author Laurell K. Hamilton offers a sexy, suspenseful novel of human - and inhuman - passions, as vampire hunter Anita Blake must repay a favor to a man almost as dangerous as the ancient evil she's about to face....

I wasn't sure how I felt about Kimberly Alexis' narration in the beginning, but she definitely grew on me. Now I've moved on to Narcissus in Chains with Cynthia Holloway, and I find myself missing Kimberly...

Story
SIx months have passed since Anita Blake has seen either Jean-Claude or Richard. Six months of celibacy. Six months of indecision. Six months of danger. For her body carries the marks of both vampire and werewolf, and until the triumvirate is consummated, all three remain vulnerable. But when a kidnapper targets innocents that Anita has sworn to protect, she needs all the help she can get. In an earth-shattering union, Anita, Jean-Claude, and Richard merge the marks - and melt into one another.

What's up with this narrator?
Reviewed: 01-30-11
I've been reading the Anita Blake series for a while and decided to download the audiobooks for listening while running. I started where I left off in the series, Obsidian Butterfly, and was pleasantly impressed with the narration (Kimberly Alexis). So I moved on to Narcissus in Chains. God awful. Cynthia Holloway...who doesn't know how to pronounce "wereleopard" - it's just like "werewolf"! So many mispronunciations, and terrible distinctions for different characters. (Accents, anyone?) And maybe it's just because I started off with a different female narrator, but Cynthia sounds kind of whiney to me.
Besides cringe-worthy narration, it's terrible editing. I know it's an abridged version, but some critical things were left out of the story. I couldn't get through the whole thing. I turned it off, went out and bought the paperback, and now I'm downloading the first in the series, Guilty Pleasures. Maybe since it's been so long since I read it, it'll keep me distracted from my running. Plus, it's got Kimberly Alexis.
