Story
Tara Westover and her family grew up preparing for the End of Days but, according to the government, she didn’t exist. She hadn’t been registered for a birth certificate. She had no school records because she’d never set foot in a classroom, and no medical records because her father didn’t believe in hospitals. As she grew older, her father became more radical and her brother more violent. At 16, Tara knew she had to leave home. In doing so she discovered both the transformative power of education, and the price she had to pay for it.

Story
For years, rumors of the 'Marsh Girl' have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved.

This is the second in this series that I’ve listened to. Anton Lesser is faultless as a narrator. I have bought all the others in the series now as I really enjoy the plots and well-researched historical setting. I also find Matthew Shardlake a very believable and likeable protagonist.

Story
Set in the turbulent years following the death of Lorenzo de' Medici, George Eliot's fourth novel, Romola, moves the stage from the English countryside of the 19th century to an Italy four centuries before her time. It tells the tale of a young Florentine woman, Romola de' Bardi, and her coming of age through her troubled marriage to the suave and self-absorbed Greek Tito. Slowly Tito's true character begins to unfurl, and his lies and treachery push Romola toward a more spiritual path, where she transcends into a majestic, Madonna-like role.

Late 15th Century Florence brought to life
Reviewed: 07-14-21
Brilliantly brought to life and full of historical detail with perceptive insights into human nature. The depth of characterisation is remarkable. This novel is probably less universally accessible than other George Eliot novels I’ve read - namely Middlemarch, Silas Marner and Adam Bede - because of the setting but to those interested in Florentine history and the Renaissance should particularly enjoy it.
The character of Romola is believable and appealing as Tito is fascinating.

Story
Hardy's first major literary success, here brought to life by narrator Nathaniel Parker, is the story of the independent and spirited Bathsheba Everdene, who inherits her uncle's farm, the largest estate in the area. She surprises the villagers of Weatherbury by deciding to run it herself. Attracted to this bold young woman are three suitors all vying for her affections. They include the lonely gentleman-farmer Boldwood, the young and handsome but inconsiderate Sergeant Troy and the faithful shepherd Gabriel Oak.

Story
This was the most popular novel of Radcliffe's time; Radcliffe's portrayal of her heroine's inner life raised the Gothic romance to a new level. The atmosphere of fear and the gripping plot continue to thrill today. This is the story of the orphaned Emily St Aubert, who finds herself separated from the man she loves and confined within the Castle of Udolpho by her aunt's new husband Montoni. Here she must cope with an unwanted suitor, Montoni's threats, and the wild imaginings and terrors which threaten to overwhelm her.

A Gothic education!
Reviewed: 05-15-21
I wanted to read this being a fan of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey. I really enjoyed it. It is very long so I particularly appreciated being able to multi-task as one can with Audible. I always enjoy the rich language of any late 18th Century writings. It made me smile quite often and I can see why Jane Austen wanted to satirise it! I admire Mrs Ratcliffe’s audacity in describing in great detail places she’d never been to. She did it rather well as she was good at creating atmosphere. The fainting females made me laugh as did the terror as one couldn’t take it too seriously - no nightmares for me! The plot was a bit convoluted but it was a good read/listen! Alison Larkin is an excellent narrator. The main characters are all French and Italian but the accents had to be British - I’m not sure that she could have contrived it any other way. Thank you Audible.

Story
If Elizabeth Bennet had the washing of her own petticoats, Sarah thought, she would be more careful not to trudge through muddy fields. It is wash-day for the housemaids at Longbourn House, and Sarah's hands are chapped and bleeding. Domestic life below stairs, ruled tenderly and forcefully by Mrs Hill the housekeeper, is about to be disturbed by the arrival of a new footman smelling of the sea, and bearing secrets.

Sensitive, raw and convincing

A beautiful, tender yet raw and at times harrowing story so believable with characters who seem so real. Historical detail, imagery and minute observations create a complete world. An entirely different perspective on Pride and Prejudice which really makes one reflect on the harsh contrast between servants and the families they serve and how very much greater insecurities were for the working class. I’m going to keep re-visiting this book. The relationships between the characters were wonderful - I can’t only listen once! Emma Fielding is the perfect narrator too. Thank you.
