Story
Mo's latest assignment is assisting the police in containing an unusual outbreak: ordinary citizens suddenly imbued with extraordinary abilities of the superpowered kind. Unfortunately these people prefer playing superpranks instead of superheroics. The mayor of London being levitated by a dumpy man in Trafalgar Square would normally be a source of shared amusement for Mo and Bob, but they're currently separated because something's come between them - something evil.

Just a terrible plot, narrator and tone. Nothing like the previous novels. Just skip this entry. It has none of the humor or fun of the previous entries, and the narrator is terrible. Bob has no role in it, and Mo becomes a cheating, humorless whiner. Hopefully, she will disappear from the future novels. If not, I'm done with this series.

How many useless adjectives and adverbs can a writer cram into a sentence? Read a few paragraphs of this book and you'll find out. It's embarrassing how many people found this book "spellbinding" and "riveting". This book would receive a C+ in a high school freshman writing course. I have to ask, "who is this guys editor"? He or she should be fired immediately.
This is what is passing for contemporary science fiction now? Pathetic.

Don't waste a minute of your life listening to this. It is so bad in so many ways that I can't begin to list them. Most of all, this IS NOT hard science fiction. It reads like it was written by a teenager for elementary school children, and fails at that level! The only thing worse than the writing was the narrator. How does a story like this get published?

Nothing ever changes in Sanders. The town's still got a video store, for God's sake. So why doesn't Eli Teague want to leave? Not that he'd ever admit it, but maybe he's been waiting - waiting for the traveler to come back. The one who's roared into his life twice before, pausing just long enough to drop tantalizing clues before disappearing in a cloud of gunfire and a squeal of tires. The one who's a walking anachronism, with her tricorne hat, flintlock rifle, and steampunked Model A Ford.

If you can suspend your disbelief upon reading the main plot concept, then go for it, but I couldn't believe that a writer that I normally enjoy reading could come up with such a preposterous idea. The American Dream is a magical spell made by an Egyptian God!? It's utterly ridiculous.

Why do authors insist on narrating their books?

Might have been good, but narrator (Sigler) was horrible. Do not bother to buy this book, because the author is one of the worst narrators I've ever heard. It was unbearable.

The author has completely run out of ideas and enthusiasm for the storyline and should have dropped it many books prior. I enjoyed his early novels, but trying to slog through this muck is impossible. He needs to find new subject matter.

Story
The folks in Mike Erikson's small New England town would say he's just your average, everyday guy. And that's exactly how Mike likes it. Sure, the life he's chosen isn't much of a challenge to someone with his unique gifts, but he's content with his quiet and peaceful existence. That is, until an old friend presents him with an irresistible mystery, one that Mike is uniquely qualified to solve.

So much better than the EX series. I didn't want this book to end, and I am hoping that there will be a sequel with Mike returning as the central character. This book has much more in common with 14 than the EX series and has a couple of nice surprises in the plot structure, so if you enjoyed 14, you will love this novel.
My only complaint is regarding the narrator's horrifying attempt at modifying his voice for the different characters. He has a wonderful natural voice and does a great job of holding tempo, but when he changes to the grating falsetto for the female characters, I want to scream at him to stop. He needs to learn that making minor changes in his voice is just fine when changing characters because he has zero ability to switch the timbre of his voice as many narrators do.

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr. Caldwell calls her "our little genius". Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up.

This is a real story with excellent characterization, skillful writing and an outstanding narrator. As others have said, don't let the zombie concept deter you from reading this book, particularly if you have never read a "zombie" book. The character development is particularly good and kept me deeply interested in the book. Don't even hesitate one second to buy this book.

but I just barely made it through the first book because the plot structure is disorganized and a bit hard to swallow at times. I feel like the writer can't decide whether to write this as an all out spoof of magical horror stories, or try to just barely keep it serious. I like the narrator a lot and the characters are fun, but it just never makes the jump to really keeping my interest for more than 30 minutes. I am still going to purchase the next book in the series, because it has a ton of promise and it is just so close to being really good that I have to give it another shot.

This has to be one of the worst books that I have listened to/read in decades. How does someone this bad get published? The dialogue is so pathetic and the characters are so one-dimensional that at times I wondered if this was written as a parody.
