Story
Is it violence if it's virtual? The outspoken women targeted by the increasingly cruel Internet trolls and bullies would probably say so. For some of them, the torrents of bile and vicious threats prove too much. They begin to silence themselves in a series of high-profile suicides. Or do they? Tony Hill isn't convinced. But he's the only one.

I enjoyed the writing, the characters and the tale very much. This was my first encounter with McDermid. The ending was rushed and did not meet the standards set up by the first 52 chapters of the book. Yet, based on reviews of others concerning the Carol Jordan/Tony Hill series, I look forward to giving another novel in this series a listen.

Story
Kiese Laymon is a fearless writer. In his essays, personal stories combine with piercing intellect to reflect both on the state of American society and on his experiences with abuse, which conjure conflicted feelings of shame, joy, confusion, and humiliation. Laymon invites us to consider the consequences of growing up in a nation wholly obsessed with progress yet wholly disinterested in the messy work of reckoning with where we’ve been.

Story
Birds are astonishingly intelligent creatures. In fact, according to revolutionary new research, some birds rival primates and even humans in their remarkable forms of intelligence. Like humans, many birds have enormous brains relative to their size. Although small, bird brains are packed with neurons that allow them to punch well above their weight.

I was really looking forward to this book, but disappointed. The organization of the information seemed scattered and repetitive. That being said, I may purchase the physical book to refer to certain sections as the subject matter was fascinating. It just may be that a book with so many references and so much research doesn't lend itself well to oral presentation.

Story
Robin Wilde has a beautiful six-year-old daughter, a job she's really rather good at, a wonderful best friend and an auntie who is bonkers, yes, but loves her to the moon and back. But Robin has a secret. Behind the mask she carefully applies every day, she can't shift the grey, lonely feelings of The Emptiness. She struggles to fit in with the school mum crew, online dating is totally despair-inducing and she worries all the time about raising her daughter with self-confidence, courage and joy.

In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Trevor Noah has lived quite a life up to now! His narration of the book is wonderfully packed with the proper inflections for the text and African pronunciations that I would have struggled with had I simply read the book. I hope his mother is very proud of her son!

I would have liked it more with another author
Reviewed: 02-02-18
Bill Browder's experience is scary and fascinating. I was distracted by the fact that it was not written by a biographer or historian, but rather by the man who lived the events that unfolded. So, I wondered if he was bragging or exaggerating some aspects of the story. It is an important chronicle of what brought about the Russian sanctions. For that I am grateful.

I wanted to love this book as I do Eleanor's contributions to our country, but I found it started getting repetitive about the love story. So much so that it bogged down the advancement of the narrative.

Tiffany can't avoid being funny: it's just who she is. But The Last Black Unicorn is so much more than a side-splittingly hilarious collection of essays - it's a memoir of the struggles of one woman who came from nothing and nowhere. A woman who was able to achieve her dreams by reveling in her pain and awkwardness, showing the world who she really is, and inspiring others through the power of laughter.

It's the last day of 1984, and 85-year-old Lillian Boxfish is about to take a walk. As she traverses a grittier Manhattan, a city anxious after an attack by a still-at-large subway vigilante, she encounters bartenders, bodega clerks, chauffeurs, security guards, bohemians, criminals, children, parents, and parents to be in surprising moments of generosity and grace. While she strolls Lillian recalls a long and eventful life that included a brief reign as the highest paid advertising woman in America - a career cut short by marriage, motherhood, divorce, and a breakdown.

A Quiet, Important Read/Listen
Reviewed: 08-02-17
I'm glad I listened to this book because, it added a dimension I may not have had were I to have read it. In a way, a central theme of the book is listening. Listening to the experiences of others. Listening to our own stories. It is a way of honoring and reveling in the wisdom and insight we all (hopefully) gain along our "walks."

In his wickedly brilliant first novel, Debut Dagger Award winner Alan Bradley introduces one of the most singular and engaging heroines in recent fiction: Eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison. It is the summer of 1950 - and a series of inexplicable events has struck Buckshaw, the decaying English mansion that Flavia’s family calls home. A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath.
