Story
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

Honest and Hard-hitting

Come at this with an open mind, and you'll learn a lot. DiAngelo pulls no punches and allows for zero excuses, but also comes across as fair and understanding. This book is a wake-up call, and she writes as if she trusts her fellow white people to be able to live up to it.

I really appreciate this talk, and I plan on listening to it again when I can be in a more meditative state. It's a live performance, with all the pauses and extra background noise that comes with that. I felt it only added to the performance. A great way to start my study of Buddhism.

Story
At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

A real connection

I came across this book at a time when I was going through some personal crises of my own. I really connected with this book, the author, and the lessons in it. It may not be for everyone, but it was definitely what I needed. I'd like to thank Cheryl Strayed for sharing this, if I ever meet her.
