Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Fun Sci-Fi
Reviewed: 06-03-25
Fast paced, fun sci-fi. It took a little while to set up the story, but after a few chapters, I was hooked and wanted to finish. I see that there are a lot of books in this series and I'll listen to more. But not back to back. I wouldn't want them to get stale.

Story
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Interesting Cultural detail, but ...
Reviewed: 10-03-23
Spoiler alert.
The book has a lot of interesting cultural and historical detail, but the actual plot is lacking. Some characters went nowhere (Dolly, the twins) and I couldn't figure out why they were part of the story. Some of the major events were predictable (the death of the Baby Ninan, that Philippos wasn't Miriamma's father). Finally, there is a lot of Digby's story at the beginning and just a little at the end. It was frustrating because the reader's early investment in his character isn't rewarded. It's almost as if he was added to the story in a later draft as a foil for the ending. Was Elsie's obsession with her art part of the condition? If not, there isn't a way to forgive her single mindedness even to the point of sacrificing her body. I'm happy that I listened, but it was less than I hoped for after Cutting for Stone.
I did enjoy the narration, it added to the story immensely to hear it in accented English, with pronunciation I couldn't imagine in a hardcopy. And because it was narrated by the author, I did feel the love of family that came through, knowing many of the characters had roots in his own family history.

Story
There has always been a darkness to Ilmar, but never more so than now. The city chafes under the heavy hand of the Palleseen occupation, the choke-hold of its criminal underworld, the boot of its factory owners, the weight of its wretched poor and the burden of its ancient curse. What will be the spark that lights the conflagration? Despite the city's refugees, wanderers, murderers, madmen, fanatics and thieves, the catalyst, as always, will be the Anchorwood–that dark grove of trees, that primeval remnant, that portal, when the moon is full, to strange and distant shores.

Great Narration, not my favorite A.T. Story
Reviewed: 09-14-23
Some authors get stuck in a rut, but definitely not Adrian Tchaikovsky. I was expecting to enjoy a great sci-fi that challenges our assumption about sentient life, like many of his other works. But, this was entirely different. I loved the narration, but the story never grabbed me.

Hard topics written with sensitivity
Reviewed: 05-31-23
Having only read YA fantasy from this author, which I enjoyed, I was surprised by this change in genre. The main characters, their back stories and the sensitive treatment of cultural differences, racism, addiction, loss, violence, and forgiveness are well written. If I have a criticism, it is only that some of the secondary characters are a bit one dimensional, but perhaps there was some editing done on them. The narrators were perfect for the characters.

Fun short story

Definitely a different story plot from most anything I’ve ever read (heard) before. The length was perfect for a couple hours of accompanying audio while I went about my solitary housework chores. The ending twist to the story was unexpected. I thought the reflections of the narrator went a little long. Worth the time.

Story
Cilka is just 16-years-old when she is taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp in 1942, where the commandant immediately notices how beautiful she is. Forcibly separated from the other women prisoners, Cilka learns quickly that power, even unwillingly taken, equals survival. When the war is over and the camp is liberated, freedom is not granted to Cilka: She is charged as a collaborator for sleeping with the enemy and sent to a Siberian prison camp. But did she really have a choice?

Compelling and well narrated

Like most people, I found the Tattooist of Auschwitz a moving story of finding love and hope in the worst of circumstances. I was intrigued by this examination of another important character in Lale’s tale. Unlike the first book, this story focuses on Cilka’s second imprisonment in the Gulag, while flashing back to her time and role in Auschwitz-Birkenau. If anything, her tale is more compelling and more horrific — and because of that, maybe more beautiful in the end. I loved the narration; it was perfect.
