Story
Effy Sayre has always believed in fairy tales. Haunted by visions of the Fairy King since childhood, she’s had no choice. Her tattered copy of Angharad—Emrys Myrddin’s epic about a mortal girl who falls in love with the Fairy King, then destroys him—is the only thing keeping her afloat. So when Myrddin’s family announces a contest to redesign the late author’s estate, Effy feels certain it’s her destiny. But musty, decrepit Hiraeth Manor is an impossible task, and its residents are far from welcoming.

A Moody Book
Reviewed: 04-23-24
Story is pretty slow till about the halfway point and then it picks up. I’d classify it closer to magical realism than fantasy. You’re never completely sure it’s fully real or not real till the end and even then I’m skeptical. Very good book though.

Possibly the best performance ever

Usually I’d say it’s your preference whether to read or listen to a book but for this one I’d say the audiobook is genuinely way better than just reading it. Seriously, just listen to it and thank me later.

Story
Emily Wilde is a genius scholar of faerie folklore who just wrote the world’s first comprehensive encyclopedia of faeries. She’s learned many of the secrets of the Hidden Ones on her adventures . . . and also from her fellow scholar and former rival Wendell Bambleby. Because Bambleby is more than infuriatingly charming. He’s an exiled faerie king on the run from his murderous mother and in search of a door back to his realm.

Great return to a wonderful world

It really kept with the same tone as the first book. Performances were amazing and the story was great. I still think I liked the first book more but not sure why. Definitely recommend it though.

Story
Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries. She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world’s first encyclopaedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people. She could never make small talk at a party—or even get invited to one. And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, Shadow, and the Fair Folk to other people. So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk.

Though, I think the twist was a bit more satisfying in the first book but this is just as good! Dark, fun and immersive. Loved it!

God this was awful

I don't know what I disliked more.... the weird pacing (spending literally half the book talking about her parents backstory and maybe two pages on the climax of the whole thing), the cringeworthy self references to it being essentially the same story as Cinderella ("it's almost like I'm Cinderella and they're the evil step siblings"...uh no shit), or the repetitive dialogue and the absolute lack of any character development at all. I mean, going into this I wasn't expecting a masterpiece but I wanted it to be at least partially entertaining. Oh and the introduction of the Italian vineyard manager had all the build up in the world and the character ultimately had no point. A frustrating and disappointing read.
