Story
There may never be another era of science like the first half of the twentieth century, when many of the most important physicists ever to live—Marie Curie, Max Planck, Wolfgang Pauli, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, Ernst Schrödinger, Albert Einstein, and others—came together to uncover the quantum world: a concept so outrageous and shocking, so contrary to traditional physics, that its own founders rebelled against it until the equations held up and fundamentally changed our understanding of reality. Tobias Hürter takes us back to this uniquely momentous and harrowing time.

A pleasant surprise
Reviewed: 03-18-24
I am a chemist, and have a fairly deep understanding of the science presented here. This book is unusual in that it focuses on certain principal characters, but from a social and political point of view. In that regard, the story is accessible to anyone, without requiring an advanced degree to appreciate or understand. A very enjoyable read. Despite my scientific background, I leaned a great deal.

I always loved her music, but I never knew much about her as a person. High intellectual and emotionally intelligence, she is a person of great depth and self understanding. Her honesty is refreshing, and her willingness to examine everything, including herself, is unusual. I wish the book was longer!

Story
Bill Parcells may be the most iconic football coach of our time. During his decades-long tenure as an NFL coach, he turned failing franchises into contenders. He led the ailing New York Giants to two Super Bowl victories, turned the New England Patriots into an NFL powerhouse, reinvigorated the New York Jets, brought the Dallas Cowboys back to life, and was most recently enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

As a lifelong Giants fan, I have to admit that I really didn't know a lot about Parcells, other than his brief time with the Giants and Jets. Well written, lots of interesting backstory, and great narration, this was a great read. Recommended.

Quantum theory is weird. As Niels Bohr said, if you aren’t shocked by quantum theory, you don’t really understand it. For most people, quantum theory is synonymous with mysterious, impenetrable science. And in fact for many years it was equally baffling for scientists themselves. In this tour de force of science history, Manjit Kumar gives a dramatic and superbly written account of this fundamental scientific revolution.

Great high-level overview of the development of QM
Reviewed: 01-26-23
Although learning all of this in school in pursuit of my chemistry and physics degrees, this book does a great job of placing all of the backstory in historical context, bringing it to life. Well written and well narrated, this book would be enjoyable both to scientists and lay people. A rigorous facility with chemistry, physics, and mathematics is not required to understand the story of QM. For those interested, further reading would be warranted, but not necessary to understand and appreciate the book itself. Recommended.

Story
Back in the fall of 2016, we heard the news about the passing of Eddie Antar, "Crazy Eddie" as he was known to millions of people, the man behind the successful chain of electronic stores and one of the most iconic ad campaigns in history. Few things evoke the New York of a particular era the way "Crazy Eddie! His prices are insaaaaane!" does. The journalist Herb Greenberg called his death the "end of an era" and that couldn't be more true. What's insane is that his story has never been told.

A crazy story about Crazy Eddie
Reviewed: 01-09-23
I grew up in Brooklyn, right smack in the Syrian Jewish community that produced the Antar family, and I lived only a few blocks from the main Crazy Eddie store on Coney Island Avenue. It's strange to hear of the story from the inside - I already had known of the story from the outside. Well written, a story so completely bonkers that it must be true, and great narration. Recommended reading for anyone familiar with the NY phenomenon of Crazy Eddie. Disturbing, hilarious, and a great read.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Not as great as The Martian, but a great read
Reviewed: 11-11-22
Crazy story, excellent narration. The narrator really brings the characters to life. The plausibility of the science is believable, and like The Martian, must have required an impressive amount of research to pull off. I don't care for sci-fi stories where the basic premise requires a leap of faith for buy-in (Interstellar). I enjoyed this book very much.

Come with us to an Enchanted Place, a forest where Winnie-the-Pooh lived with Piglet, Rabbit, Owl, Eeyore, Kanga, and Little Roo. The stories are about Christopher Robin and these good companions having wonderful times getting in and out of trouble. It is all very exciting and, really, quite thrilling no matter how young or old you may be. It is painful to try and imagine what the world would be like without them.

An excellent survey of thermodynamics
Reviewed: 10-22-22
As a chemical engineer I have had plenty of thermodynamics courses during my years of school. As a lecturer, thermodynamics had proven to be one of most challenging topics to teach. Although not rigorous, this series had provided me with lots of ideas to incorporate into my presentation of the material. Anyone with an interest in thermodynamics will be able to follow this without any mathematical knowledge behind advanced algebra. I enjoyed this very much. Excellent lecturer, excellent presentation.

Story
Classical physics is about how things move, why they move, and how they work. It's about making sense of motion, gravity, light, heat, sound, electricity, and magnetism, and seeing how these phenomena interweave to create the rich tapestry of everyday experience. It is, in short, the hidden order of the universe.

Although I have a significant background in the material (I'm a physical chemist), I bet much enjoyed these series of lectures. The material is presented with the last person in mind, and does not require an understanding of advanced mathematics to appreciate the material. The quality of the lectures are first-rate -- they're clear, lots of clever real-works examples, and presented in an inviting manner. Recommended.
