Story
January, 2003. Together with the usual holiday cards, an anonymous postcard is delivered to the Berest family home. On the front, a photo of the Opéra Garnier in Paris. On the back, the names of Anne Berest’s maternal great-grandparents, Ephraïm and Emma, and their children, Noémie and Jacques—all killed at Auschwitz. Fifteen years after the postcard is delivered, Anne, the heroine of this novel, is moved to discover who sent it and why.

What a beautifully told and very personal story based in truth. I am so intrigued with this period of time, wondering how it was possible for the Nazis to wreak such havoc. I fear history is repeating itself now with the rise of hatred in this country. Anti-Semitism is on the rise as is fear of immigrants. Women’s rights are being taken away. This time the story will be worse.

Story
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

A beautifully composed story of Jewish immigrants, black Americans, when inmates at the dreaded Pennhurst Asylum for the insane. I’ve met some people formally housed at Pennhurst and now have a better understanding of the horror they survived.

Story
Two teenagers, a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot, meet at a taverna on the island they both call home. In the taverna, hidden beneath garlands of garlic, chili peppers and creeping honeysuckle, Kostas and Defne grow in their forbidden love for each other. A fig tree stretches through a cavity in the roof, and this tree bears witness to their hushed, happy meetings and eventually, to their silent, surreptitious departures. The tree is there when war breaks out, when the capital is reduced to ashes and rubble, and when the teenagers vanish.

Didactic
Reviewed: 02-05-24
I thought this was going be an interesting story, but it quickly turned into didactic teaching about the life of trees, in particular the fig. Having read Richard Powers, ‘The Overstory’, which did a much better job of integrating the life and importance of trees, without espousing, without trying too hard to educate me about trees, I grew bored. Moving on to another book from my Audible wish list.

I knew very little about the Spanish Civil War. I particularly appreciated learning more about the amazing activist poet, Pablo Neruda. The character development was slow and engaging. I reviewed this book in my book group and called it, "Perfect!"

Richard Powers book, “The Overstory” remains one of my all time favorites for introducing me to a new and wondrous world. “Bewilderment” was more difficult to read as it delved into complex science. It reveals a universe through the eyes of his much beloved son, an enlightened child. Powers has learned so much about our existence on this planet earth and shares his knowledge with passion and gentle persuasion. His is a message we should heed.

Story
Sicily has always acted as a gateway between Europe and the rest of the world. Fought over by the Phoenicians and Greeks, the Romans, Goths and Byzantines, Arabs and Normans, Germans, and the Spanish and the French for thousands of years, Sicily became a unique melting pot where diverse traditions merged, producing a unique heritage and singular culture. In this fascinating account of the island from the earliest times to the present day, author and journalist Jamie Mackay leads us through this most elusive of places.

Story
Franny Stone has always been the kind of woman who is able to love but unable to stay. Leaving behind everything but her research gear, she arrives in Greenland with a singular purpose: to follow the last Arctic terns in the world on what might be their final migration to Antarctica. Franny talks her way onto a fishing boat, and she and the crew set sail, traveling ever further from shore and safety. But as Franny’s history begins to unspool - a passionate love affair, an absent family, a devastating crime - it becomes clear that she is chasing more than just the birds.

Read with a bad Italian accent
Reviewed: 01-21-23
I’ve traveled to Italy an uncountable number of times, I tend to love books that take place there. After only a few pages, I had to stop listening to this narrator. His fake accent was intolerable. Maybe the story is good, but not in this audible production. Maybe I’ll read the paperback?

With the epic sweep of Min Jin Lee's Pachinko and Yaa Gyasi's Homegoing and the lyrical beauty of Vaddey Ratner's In the Shadow of the Banyan, The Mountains Sing tells an enveloping, multigenerational tale of the Trần family, set against the backdrop of the Việt Nam War. Trần Diệu Lan, who was born in 1920, was forced to flee her family farm with her six children during the Land Reform as the Communist government rose in the North.
