Story
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

Remembering matters

I'm 81 and served in the nurse corps from 1963 to 1969. The folks in the book were my age. Every chapter of this book described those times so well that it took me on a long trip back to my youth. In '66, my dress blues were spat upon at the Atlanta airport. We took to wearing civilian clothes to and from work at the hospital. Still, my patients helped each other and warmed my heart with their courage and 'can do' attitude. I was in awe of the Air Force nurses who brought our patients home, and the nurses stationed in Vietnam who helped them survive to make the trip. Instead of Vietnam, I was sent on to a new Naval air station in Georgia--a turn of events for which I am eternally thankful. I am also thankful that this book was written. This is a good example of fiction representing reality better than non-fiction would. It is really important that she told this story.

I've read each of the books in this series several times over the years. They are like visiting old friends. Not only do I enjoy the character and story development in each book, but I also glean the tidbits of wisdom that have refined my own view of life. This final book was the most satisfying was to say goodbye.

It is hard to pick a favorite from a list of her books, but one of my Christmas traditions has become listening to this book each December while I knit Christmas gifts.

The author’s ability to present the inner life of her characters in and empathetic manner is one of the best aspects of this book. It was quite satisfying indeed.
